Corn roast | Lansing

A corn roast is from 2 to 5 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church of Lansing, 18420 Burnham Ave. There will be hamburgers, salad and dessert. The cost is $7 for adults, $3 for children 5 to 10 and free for younger children.

Car wash | South Holland

Members of Restoration Ministries' Harvey Boxing Club are holding a car wash from 9 a.m. to 1 today at Thornton

Township Hall, 333 E. 162nd St. All proceeds will support Restoration Ministries' Harvey Boxing Club, where children ages 8-18 learn to become champions in the ring and in life.

Penny drive | Lansing

The Lan-Oak Park Foundation, in cooperation with Lan-Oak Park District, is offering the Pennies in the Park program. They are looking for civic groups, social clubs, businesses, families and anyone else who cares about the new Park Plaza to participate by raising pennies, nickels and dimes to develop future amenities at the park. The official kickoff is at 6 tonight in downtown Lansing, coinciding with the final cruise night.

Arts explosion | South Holland

Kingdom Arts Explosion will take place at 7 p.m. today at Calvary Community Church, 16341 S. Park. The evening will include entertainment, a dessert table and the Creative Arts team performing skits, music, dance and comedy. The event is free.

Summer festival | Burnham

The Village of Burnham will have a summer festival and movie night for all residents starting at 2 p.m. today at Lawhead Park, 14450 Manistee Ave. There will be free food, music and a water slide. With proof of residency, kids can get free school supplies. A movie will start at dusk and attendees should bring their own chairs.

Women's health | Dolton

Ingalls Wellness Center will present Heart Smart for Women from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Dolton Public Library. This program is a 12-week series that will help women of all ages learn healthy eating tips and how to fit physical activity into their busy lives, whether at home, at work or at play. Participants will learn to set reasonable goals, read labels and become more aware of healthy choices that can lead to better health and more energy. There is a one-time registration fee of $10.

Weight loss | Lansing

Weight loss challenge is a 12-week program that provides advice on proper nutrition, food choices and encourages exercise. There are cash prizes to those who lose the most. Classes start Aug. 30.

Steger Days | Steger

The Village of Steger will present Steger Days today and Aug. 24 at Veteran's Park, 35th Street and Phillips Avenue. Activities will begin at 1 p.m. each day. Food vendors and craft, product vendors will set up in the park both days. There will be free activities for kids including, games, train rides, Moon Walk, and Magic Show with Brutus the Psychic Bunny Rabbit.

Today's activities include a bean bag tournament beginning at 3 p.m. The Steger Fire Department Street Dance will begin under the tent at 5:30 p.m. with music performed by Midlife Crisis. They will be followed at 8 p.m. by US 99's Bill Garcia with Bernie Glim & Country Roads. Fireworks are at 9:30 p.m.

Steak fry | Griffith

American Legion Post 66 will have a steak fry from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the post, 132 Wiggs St. It is $12 per person and includes a 12-ounce New York strip and all-you-can-eat salad bar. Desserts will be available.

Camera club | Munster

The 3H Camera Club will have its first meeting of the season from 7 to 9 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Salvation Army Community Center, 8225 Columbia Ave. They will meet the first and third Mondays of the month at this location.

Summer supper | Griffith

The women's organization of Griffith Lutheran Church will host a summer supper followed by a Pampered Chef party at 6 p.m. Aug. 26 at the church, 1000 N. Broad St. Attendees will learn quick, easy and inexpensive meals. Proceeds will benefit the church's kitchen and newly built prayer garden.

Golf outing | Schererville

Dyer VFW 6448 will have its eighth annual golf outing with a noon start Aug. 30 at Scherwood Golf Course. It is four-person scramble format with team skins, closest to pins, longest drives, and longest putt prizes. There will be beverages and hot dogs on the course and dinner after golf. It costs $80 per golfer.

Free program | Munster

A Fitness Pointe physical therapist will discuss arthritis, bursitis and tendonitis as well as common strategies to battle each of these problems in various joints. This free program will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at Fitness Pointe, 9950 Calumet Ave.

Crochet | Whiting

The Whiting Parks Dept. will be offering crochet lessons for ages 12 through adult. Instruction will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, beginning Sept. 11. Advanced students are welcome to bring in their own patterns/materials and receive the instructors' advice in completing the project. There will be a limited selection of free yarn for beginners to use, just bring along a size G hook. Fees for the six-week session are $30 for residents in the 46394 area zip and $35 for nonresidents. Registration required.
