Pack the Park benefits local victims of flooding

Munster has scheduled an event to bring residents and the community together to support flood victims.

It's called Pack the Park and it's from 2 to 10 p.m. Oct. 18 at Centennial Park on Calumet Avenue.

Activities include live music and family activities such as face painting, a bounce house, clowns and more. Food and beer will be sold.

All proceeds will benefit the flood victims. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children 2 to 18. Munster residents whose homes were damaged by the floods can attend for free.

Volunteers needed to help victims of flooding

Volunteers are needed to help staff the flood relief site located at Broadmoor and Monaldi streets through Oct. 19.

Responsibilities include signing up volunteers, dropping off donated supplies and handing out information to flood victims. Hours of operation are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Help is especially needed during those hours, however people also can volunteer from one to six hours.

Purdue Cal visitation program coming up

View Purdue Calumet is a program designed to show prospective students what Purdue University Calumet has to offer.

Purdue staff and faculty will be on hand during the free program, which will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the Calumet Conference Center located north of I-80/94, three blocks east of Indianapolis Boulevard and south of 173rd Street.

Information will be available about undergraduate and graduate degree programs, admission procedures, scholarships and financial aid, student housing, experiential learning and career development opportunities.

Area colleges to host forum on credit crunch

Economic and financial faculty experts from six Northwest Indiana colleges and universities will discuss the national financial and credit crisis at 8:30 a.m. Friday in Alumni Hall at Purdue University Calumet's Student Union and Library.

Partnering in the forum will be Purdue Cal, Indiana University Northwest, Calumet College of St. Joseph, Ivy Tech State College, Valparaiso University and Purdue North Central.

The forum will be conducted in two sessions. Faculty experts first will discuss the history of the current crisis, the $700 billion bailout plan and the international and local implications of the market crisis. Secondly, a 12-member panel will respond to questions from the audience.

Admission is free, but participants are asked to register in advance due to limited seating. Registration is accepted at (219) 989-2388.

HOBART

Hobart man arrested following crash reports

A 27-year-old Hobart man was arrested Monday morning after he struck two vehicles, a tree and a mailbox, then failed to stop, Lt. Steve Houck said.

Kevin R. Dujmovich has initially been charged with failure of duty pending the results of both urine and Breathalyzer tests, Houck said.

He said police were called to the scene of a traffic accident at 61st Avenue and Marcella Boulevard about 10:30 a.m. Monday.

Dujmovich fled the scene and continued to head east then south then off the road striking a tree and a mailbox. He then drove back onto 61st, striking another vehicle, police said.

He eventually was arrested by off-duty patrol officer Nick Wardrip and on-duty patrol officer Dave Beaham, who formed a block to stop Dujmovich's vehicle.

No injuries were reported in either of the two accidents, Houck said.

Blood drive at college slated for Wednesday

Indiana Wesleyan University will host a blood drive from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the campus, 8415 Georgia St.

The blood drive will benefit Jesus Eliezer, who was diagnosed with leukemia.

The Merrillville Neighborhood Watch will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday to discuss Halloween safety tips.

Ballet and tap class to get under way Oct. 18

The Merrillville parks department is offering a ballet and tap class for children 3 to 6 years old starting Oct. 18 at the Pruzin Community Center, 5750 Tyler Place.

The program meets from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Saturdays for six weeks. The deadline to register for the class is Friday.

The class costs $40 for residents and $45 for nonresidents.

Utility extension to keep road closed for a month

LGS Plumbing will have the road closed at Schneider Place and U.S. 231 for extension of utilities for the new development called St. John Crossing. Access to the subdivision will be at Schneider Street.

The road is expected to remain closed for four to six weeks.

Meeting on Monday to address future of S'ville

Schererville will host a meeting next week regarding the comprehensive plan for the town.

The meeting includes a PowerPoint presentation and will involve input from those in attendance. It will last from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Town Hall.

St. Jude House hosts photo fundraiser Oct. 25

The St. Jude House will have its annual Halloween photos from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 25 at Westfield Southlake mall. The cost is $30 per package. All proceeds from the photos will be used for children's programs at St. Jude House.

Nominations are being sought for first award

The town of Merrillville and Merrillville Chamber of Commerce will present the first Merrillville Business Longevity Award at the Nov. 8 Town Ball at The Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza.

To be nominated, a business must be located within town boundaries and be owned by founding family members. Chamber membership is not required.

Nomination letters may be forwarded to the chamber office at 255 W. 80th Place, Merrillville, IN 46410 by Friday.

Letters must include the business name, owner's name, address, phone number, date the business opened and a contact name if different than owner's name. The letter may also contain any other pertinent information, and photos of the past or present would be appreciated.
