A Griffith man was killed Monday morning when he drove his van around downed gates and was struck by a South Shore train.
The accident scene halted all westbound trains into Chicago for more than two hours.
Antoine Lungs, 24, of the 1900 block of N. Arbogast St., was pronounced dead at the scene of massive blunt force trauma as a result of the accident, a spokesman for the Lake County coroner's office said.
Transit Police Chief Robert Byrd said the fatal accident occurred just after 5:30 a.m. A full-sized conversion van was traveling northbound on County Line Road, drove around the lowered crossing gates and into the path of westbound Train No. 104.
Lungs, the only person in the van at the time, was ejected on impact and killed, Byrd said.
None of the passengers on the train or the crew were injured in the accident, Byrd said.
The van came to a stop "wrapped around a NIPSCO pole," Byrd said, with pieces of the van strewn across the eastbound track.
Service on the commuter rail line was suspended until just before 8 a.m. to allow the Lake County coroner's office could remove Lungs from the accident scene.
