Slick roads and snowy weather Monday evening kept police and fire agencies across the region busy clearing accident scenes.
Multiple accidents were reported in the Lansing, Crown Point and Winfield Township areas and on region interstates and state highways.
Indiana State Trooper Justin Neshius said there were at least 50 accidents from 3 to 6 p.m. on interstates in Northwest Indiana. An Illinois State Police trooper said there were multiple injury accidents Monday afternoon. He said there were so many he could not give details on any particular ones.
Chesterton Fire Department Lt. John Jarka said although roads weren't in the best condition, the only serious injury accident the department responded to Monday afternoon was on a stretch of Interstate 94. A man and a woman were airlifted from the scene and sent to area hospitals, but their conditions were not known, Jarka said.
Jarka said drivers have to be careful of highway overpasses, bridges and roads in open areas because those roadways are often the first to become icy.
An accident involving a truck on Interstate 94 westbound near the Indiana Toll Road about 5 p.m. held up traffic for a portion of the evening. The Indiana State Police didn't have specific information on the crash. There also were reports of an accident near 93rd Avenue and Main Street at the Merrillville-Crown Point border.
