CROWN POINT | Saying their dead daughter's burns were the worst he'd seen in 15 years, Lake Criminal Court Judge Salvador Vasquez sentenced 13-month-old Jada Bozeman's parents Monday to four years in prison and four years probation.
Tiffany Roby, 29, and Robert Bozeman, 31, of Gary, pleaded guilty to neglect of a dependent in the scalding death of Jada.
Both admitted they did not seek medical attention for the girl's burns.
Family members and ministers testified for the parents, saying they were good, loving providers to their children. Roby's aunt has custody of Roby's four older children. Carolyn Johns told Vasquez that Roby comes every day to get the children ready for school and then again at night to help them with their homework and put them to sleep.
Johns said Bozeman visits them on his days off of work and talks to them daily.
Deputy Prosecutor Kathleen O'Halloran said there were no witnesses to speak for the baby but submitted pictures of the girl's injuries and her medical records.
Vasquez grimaced as he looked at the pictures.
"I can't understand how you couldn't see the injuries were so significant that they needed medical attention," Vasquez told the couple. "I've never seen anyone burned this badly."
