BOOK JOURNEY | DeMotte

Children in kindergarten through grade 6 are invited to an After School journey in pursuit of Oliver K. Woodman, the main character in this month's Books to Bridge the Region children's selection, 'The Journey of Oliver K. Woodman' by Darcy Pattison. GYMNASTICS CLASSES | Merrillville

Merrillville Parks and Recreation Department sponsors Tumblebear Gymnastics classes for children, with a new four-week session on Wednesdays beginning Oct. 29 at Pruzin Community Center, 5750 Tyler Place. The preschool class is for ages 3 to 5 from 4:15 to 4:45 p.m. and the school age class for ages 6 and older is from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. Cost is $35 per session for residents and $40 for nonresidents. Al Stephanie Meyer fans are invited to the Twilight Prom at 6 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Lake County Public Library's Hobart branch, 100 N. Main St. Teens are welcome to come as a favorite character or just come as yourself. Enjoy trivia from all four books in the series, music, and refreshments.

Fall break has finally arrived for ages 11 to 17, so finish your homework and spend time at the playing Guitar Hero and Wii games from noon to 2 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Lake County Public Library's Hobart branch, 100 N. Main St. Bring Wii or PS2 games to share, but please be sure they are appropriate for all ages. Refreshments will be provided.

PRESCHOOL IN THE PARK | Hobart

Preschool in the Park for ages 3 and 4 will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 1 to 2 p.m. Thursdays through October at Deep River County Park, 9410 Old Lincoln Highway. Children may hear stories, play games, make a craft, sing songs, do finger plays and take home a treat or coloring page. Fee is $1 per child and no advance registration is needed. HOOPS LEAGUE | Hobart

Registration is open through Oct. 25 for a fall basketball league for boys and girls 3 to 9 at the Hobart Family YMCA, 601 W. 40th Place. Cost is $30 for members and $60 for nonmembers and play starts Nov. 15. Every player will receive a team T-shirt and trophy.

TRUNK OR TREAT | Winfield

Bring the kids to "Trunk or Treat" from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at Church of the Four Seasons, 9100 E. 109th Ave., across from the Lakes of the Four Seasons entrance. There will be fun for the whole family with a bonfire, hot dogs, s'mores, hay rides and a children's costume parade and contest (no scary costumes please) Trunk or Treat, with children trick-or-treating from the trunk of cars instead of walking through the neighborhoods. Adults are welcome to bring treats and distribute them to the youngsters from their cars.

BENEFIT FOR YOUTH | Hammond

Each One Reach One Child, a not-for-profit, is sponsoring a dinner and silent auction fundraiser Oct. 24 at Dynasty Banquets, 4141 Calumet Ave. The annual black-tie event begins at 7 p.m. and tickets are $50. Dinner is served at 7:30 p.m. Experts David Kolbaba, of Health Quest News and Science, and Vivian Taylor, director of Southside Center for Youth in Chicago, are scheduled to speak on ADHD and other social and psychological disorders in raising awareness against youth violence. Each One Reach One Child provides peace and violence prevention for children and youth in Illinois and Indiana.
