Flea market | South Holland
The South Suburban College men's and women's basketball teams are hosting a fundraiser and are looking for sellers and buyers for a one-day flea market. The flea market will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 4 at the main campus in South Parking Lot E next to the Fitness Center. There is a $25 fee for vendors.

Oktoberfest | Chicago Heights
The 27th annual Marian Catholic Band Parents' Oktoberfest will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 5. There are more than 100 crafters and vendors planning to attend. They will set up throughout Marian's East Gym and hallways. Treats will be available in the new Marian Leadership Center. The day will also include a raffle, prize drawings, musical entertainment and the Bears game on television. Admission is $1. Senior citizens and children younger than 12 are admitted free.

Small business | Dolton
The Dolton Public Library will host a series of four sessions on starting a small business, to be presented by Vicki Brooks of the University of Illinois Extension. The series will begin at 6 p.m. Oct. 8 and continue through Oct. 29. These workshops are designed to help participants understand what is involved in starting a business, what it takes to be successful, and how to actually get started. Each session includes an interactive presentation followed by a question and answer period. Register.

The Office of Career Services at Governors State University is sponsoring a Criminal Justice and Public Safety career fair from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9 in the Hall of Governors. Prospective employers from the fields of law enforcement, public administration and security services will meet with job candidates. The career fair is open to current students, GSU alumni, and members of the community seeking employment in these fields. There is no charge for job seekers. NOT SO SCARY GOLF | Cedar Lake
Play Not So Scary Mini Golf from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 1 through 31, with extended weekend hours until 9 p.m. Oct. 17, 18, 24 and 15, at the Lake County Parks and Recreation Department's Cedar Creek Family Golf Center, 10483 W. 109th Ave. There is a spooky atmosphere, but not too spooky for youngsters who are not fond of the dark. Bring the little princesses and pirates dressed in costumes of their choice and they will receive a special treat. Cost is $5.50 for adults and $4.50 for children 12 and younger. FALL FESTIVAL | Lowell
The Buckley Homestead Fall Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 4 and 5 at Buckley Homestead County Park, 3606 Belshaw Road. The festival will include family fun, food, historic buildings, hay rides, entertainment and traditional arts and crafts, as well as demonstrations. The farmers will be in the west pasture and Lake County Master Gardeners will be in the garden. Cost is $3 per person; children 7 and younger are free. A separate fee for the corn maze is $5 per person; $4 children ages 5 to 12; free to children younger than 5. Dogs are not permitted at the event or corn maze.

OKTOBERFEST EVENT | St. John
Enjoy German-inspired food, drink, live entertainment, and more at St. John's Oktoberfest from 3 to 7 p.m. Oct. 4, rain or shine at St. John the Evangelist School, 9400 U.S. 41. Food and drink will include hot dogs, bratwurst, cabbage & noodles, pretzels, cake, cookies, soft drinks and a cash bar serving Oktoberfest beer, mulled wine and cider. This family event will also have several games and pumpkin decorating for children, an adult bean bag tournament and live German music. Advance tickets are available from the St. John the Evangelist parish office for $5 for adults ($6 at the door) and $2 for children 3 to 12 ($3 at the door). Tickets include food, soft drinks, entertainment and activities.

GROUP HAY RIDES | Merrillville
Reservations for group hay rides at Hidden Lake Park, 6355 Broadway, can be scheduled through Oct. 26 with Ross Township Trustee John Rooda's office. Hay rides are available from noon to 8 p.m. weekdays and weekends, and include a bonfire and the use of a shelter after the 30-minute ride. One ride accommodates up to 25 people. Cost is $40 on weekdays and $60 on weekends for Ross Township residents, and $60 on weekdays and $80 on weekends for nonresidents.

Hunger banquet | East Chicago
The 16th annual Mothers Against Hunger banquet, sponsored by the four Circles of Serbian Sisters of Northwest Indiana, will be held at 1 p.m. Oct. 5 at St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, 4021 Elm St. The other three participating churches are St. George of Schererville, St. Sava of Merrillville and St. Elijah of Crown Point.

Three Creeks Historical Association presents Apple Days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Halsted House Museum, Halsted and West Main streets. Tour the museum, and enjoy home bakes apple pie and slices, apple dumplings and warm apple fritters. Children can learn about weaving, hooking rugs, quilting and basket making. Bring the cook for fresh fruits and vegetables, and the gardener to buy fall mums. Free entertainment includes High Country Band at 10:30 a.m. and The Buckley Singers at 1:30 p.m. Proceeds benefit the museum.

Free class | Dyer
Midwest Training and Ice Center, 10600 White Oak Ave., will conduct a free month of Tots Class from noon to 12:30 p.m. Thursdays in October. This free class is open to new students only, ages 3 to 5 and is an introduction to ice skating. Registration is required.
