Lake County police warn of Craigslist scam
Lake County police warned users of Craigslist Web site classifieds to avoid purchases involving mail or electronic transfer.
The alleged seller posts newer vehicles at below half of their value for a short period of time, about 20 to 30 minutes, so it can't be traced, police said.
Interested parties who respond to the ad are later contacted via e-mail.
The seller tells potential buyers that the low price is due to a divorce or some financial hardship. The buyer is then directed to send payment to another state promising to deliver the vehicle upon receipt of payment.
The seller claims to be affiliated with eBay, but is not, police said.
The most current ads have been for a 2006 PT Cruiser, 2005 Subaru Legacy and 2005 Chevrolet Silverado.
Lake County police said there have been no reports of victims yet in the county, but it is an interstate fraud.
People who believe they have been victimized by the scam can contact Detective Eddie Jenkins at (219) 755-3346.
