Step aerobics | Calumet City
The Calumet Memorial Park District is offering step aerobics, floor aerobics, pilates, kickboxing and aqua exercise for ages 16 and older. The next session begins this week.

Family fitness | Calumet City
Family Funtime Fitness is a new program from the Calumet Memorial Park District, allowing ages 7 to 14 to exercise alongside their parents. Classes will be held from 6:15 to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, Sept. 8 to Oct. 15 at the Sandridge Center, 600 Oglesby Ave. The fee is $25 per parent and child.

Bingo resumes | Chicago
Bingo will resume today at St. Florian School Gym, 131st Street and Houston Avenue in Chicago's Hegewisch neighborhood. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. Games start at 2:30 p.m. It will continue every Sunday throughout the school year. It is smoke-free and coffee is available.

Lil' Geniuses | Calumet City
Lil' Geniuses is a program offered by the Calumet Memorial Park District for 4- and 5-year-olds. It will help prepare them for the experiences of kindergarten through study of the alphabet, numbers, colors, shapes, printing, motor skills and more. This program is held from 9 a.m. to noon Mondays through Fridays. Session I will be held Sept. 8 to Dec. 19. The fee is $225 per participant. Registration is required.

Bike ride | Matteson
Today is the last day for early registration for a bike ride with Irons Oaks Environmental Learning Center. Riders will go on the Old Plank Trail and the Wauponsee Glacial Trail during the fourth annual Ride to Discovery on Sept. 21. The round-trip, 80-mile bike ride includes four stops for refreshments along these two bike paths. Choose the distance you want to go; rest stops are located at 5 miles, 15 miles, 30 miles and at the end of the trail, 40 miles. All bikers will start at the Sam's Club parking lot, 21430 S. Cicero Ave. Start times vary between 7 to 10 a.m.

The Northwest Indiana Railroad Preservation Society's monthly meeting has been moved and will take place at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 11 in the Susan Long History Room of the Hammond Public Library, 564 E. State St. Topics to be discussed are Griffith RR Days, Nickel Plate 624 and future museum grounds.

Coronary health | Munster
Community Hospital will offer a coronary health appraisal from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 13 at Community Hospital, 901 MacArthur Blvd.
This screening helps to determine the risk for heart disease and other related conditions. The screening includes total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides, blood sugar testing, blood pressure, Metabolic Syndrome assessment, and Heart Health Profile. A 14-hour fast is required. The fee for the appraisal is $30.

Photo exhibit | Chicago Heights
The Prairie State College annual Student Exhibit/Photographer of the Year features selected works by students in fine arts, photography and graphic communications. The gallery is on the college's main campus, 202 S. Halsted St.
The exhibit also honors the college's Photographer of the Year, Krystal King, of Homewood.

Farmers' market | Thornton
A farmers market and arts and crafts fair is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Wednesday through Oct. 15 at Hubbard Park, Hubbard and Margaret streets. There will be fresh fruits and vegetables, hand-crafted breads, pork chop sandwiches, vendors for products such as Avon, Tastefully Simple and Watkins. Learn the fundamentals of guitar playing from Junius Paul, a professional musician who has played all over the United States and the world. Calumet Memorial Park District is offering guitar lessons for ages 10 to adult from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 11 to Oct. 16. The fee is $20 per student. Registration is now being taken at the Sandridge Center, 600 Oglesby Ave. Participants must bring their own acoustic guitar.

Bizarre Bazaar | Hammond
The Downtown Hammond Council is hosting its third annual Bizarre Bazaar event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 20 at Hohman, Rimbach and Fayette streets. Bizarre Bazaar is an outdoor, one-day fest featuring pie baking and salsa eating contests, food and arts and crafts vendors, downtown Hammond historical scavenger hunt, K-12 grade chess tournament, musical entertainment, custom car and hot rod show, canine costume contest, live entertainment, dance troupes, and numerous kids activities including games and free arts activities. At 11:30 a.m. the event offers a free outdoor concert by the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. In addition, young and old can enter the Wacky Hat Contest with their own creation or create one at the event. Admission to the event and parking is free. Chef demo | Munster
Hospice of the Calumet Area will host its chef demonstration fundraising dinner Sept. 10 in the Centennial Ballroom at Centennial Park. The evening's fare will be prepared by a familiar face that can be found at a new address.
September's guest will be Glennard Brooks, executive chef of the new Hilton Garden Inn in Merrillville. His menu features barbecue chicken, black eyed pea salad, glazed baby carrots and turnips, and baked sweet potato pie. This is Brooks' second visit as host of the fundraising dinners.
