Book club | South Holland

South Holland Public Library hosts K.I.T.S. Book Club at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 18 at 16250 Wausau Ave. It's for those in fourth through sixth grades. Register.

Society meets | Hazel Crest

The South Suburban Genealogical and Historical Society will meet at 10 a.m. Oct. 11 at 3000 W. 170th Place. Chicago Board of Education Archives and the Episcopal Church Archives will be presented by Richard Seidel. He is involved with the Chicago Board of Education Archives, preserving and organizing 150 years of Chicago Public School educational records. The Chicago Board of Education is also in the process of building a comprehensive collection of high school yearbooks and is looking for lost records, due to relocation and destruction by the Chicago fire of 1871. He will also explain his connection with the archives of the Episcopal Church. The public is welcome.

Advocates United | Tinley Park

Advocates United will have its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Oct. 14 at The Wingate Inn, 18421 N. Creek Drive. Advocates United will host Reta Hoskins, Illinois associate director of developmental disabilities. She will discuss issues concerning people with developmental disabilities, their families and their communities.

College prices | South Holland

South Holland Public Library, 16250 Wausau Ave., will host Don't Pay The College Sticker Price at 7 p.m. Oct. 16. Joseph Orsolini will introduce three key areas of opportunity to reduce the overall cost of a college education. He will focus on strategies to maximize need-based financial aid eligibility, target the right colleges for merit-based aid and exploit tax-saving opportunities. Registration is necessary.

Snow jam | Homewood

Dust off your skis or snowboards and get ready to join in the new South Side Snow Rail Jam from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 18 at Irwin Park.

The H-F Park District will provide the snow — made by the H-F Ice Arena's Zamboni — and ramps for this inaugural, free event for outdoor-sports enthusiasts of all ages. The terrain will be provided by Wilmot Mountain in Wisconsin. Contestants can ride down the snowy rails and ramps, and jam their way to money and prizes donated by Snowcrest Ski & Snowboard Center, the event's sponsor. Grinding music will be provided; helmets and a signed waiver will be required. Irwin Park is at Ridge Road and Highland Avenue.

The Illinois Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission has planned a series of events throughout the state to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth.

Children's Etiquette | Homewood

Ages 4 to 12 will prepare dishes at Etiquette & Cooking For Kids. They will display their food creations with table set-up techniques and learn table manners. A different dish is created each week, and all kids receive a chef's hat. The theme for the next session will be Asian Delights and will be held Friday nights, Oct. 17 to Nov. 7, at the Irwin Community Center, 18120 Highland Ave. Fee is $50 for residents and $75 for nonresidents.

Workshop | University Park

Governors State University is offering a three-day workshop for everyone who works with youth in the home, at school and in the community. The workshop will help develop the skills and strategies needed to implement and apply conflict mediation and restorative justice practices. The workshop will be held on Saturdays, Oct. 25 and Nov. 1 and 8. Lunch is included. The registration fee is $250 or GSU tuition and fees for two credit hours.

Open house | University Park

The College of Business and Public Administration at Governors State University is hosting a graduate programs open house from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 11. Faculty, advisers, administrators, and current students will be on hand to discuss master's degree programs in accounting, business administration, management information systems, and public administration. Spaghetti dinner | Hammond

VFW Post 802 is having a spaghetti dinner from 4 to 7 tonight at the post, 5820 Hohman Ave. All proceeds will be donated to Operation Santa to send Christmas gifts to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Adults eat for $6 and children eat for $4.

Adaptive Learning | Munster

Munster Parks and Recreation is offering Adaptive Learning classes geared toward enriching the lives of those living with special needs. The classes are being run by a special recreation teacher from Elliott Elementary School. They are for several age groups, varying from 3 to 17 years old. Christian Fellowship Church, 605 165th, is having a free clothing outlet from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 10. A one time give-a-way will take place from 9:30 a.m. to noon Oct. 11. The outlet is open every second Friday of the month.

Latino resource fair | Hammond

The fourth Latino Resource Fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 11 at Irving Elementary School, 4727 Pine Ave. The Hammond Hispanic Community and Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce sponsor this free event featuring live entertainment, Latino food, door prizes, children's activities, information booths and more. This year's fair addresses issues in health, education and public safety. This fair has drawn more than 300 people. There will be a food drive for nonperishable foods to go to Greater Hammond Community Services. Area businesses, agencies and colleges will have information booths. Hammond Police Department will be providing "Identikid" services.

Bulldog event | Hammond

Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. and the Illiana Bulldog Club will host the annual Specialty Show Weekend from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 11 and 12 at the Jean Shepherd Community Center, 3031 J.F. Mahoney Drive. More than 70 dogs are expected. Admission is free for spectators.
