Fatality is eighth weather-related death in state
The Jasper County Sheriff's Department said an 18-year-old rural Wheatfield woman reported missing was found dead Tuesday inside her overturned car in a ditch full of water.
The death is the eighth weather-related fatality this week in the state, according to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.
Caitlyn M. Luckey's parents told police she left the house late Monday night to drive to a store and did not return.
The vehicle was found just before 1 p.m. Tuesday overturned in a ditch on County Road 400 West just north of County Road 1300 North.
Police determined Luckey had been driving southbound on 400 West, when for reasons unknown her vehicle veered to the left, turned upside down and landed in the ditch.
She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jasper County coroner's office.
The accident is under investigation.
Luckey was a 2008 graduate of Kankakee Valley High School, according to her obituary. She had just completed CNA training and was beginning a career at Lowell Healthcare Center in Lowell.
A funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Sheets Funeral Home, 604 E. Commercial Ave. in Lowell.
