Abstract art
Abstract art from the Brauer Museum of Art's permanent collection is on display through Aug. 4 at the Brauer Museum of Art, Center for the Arts, 1709 Chapel Drive. Abstract works in a variety of media will be featured in this exhibit, including many which will have their first public showing at Brauer Museum. Shakespeare workshop
Young Actors Shakespeare Workshop continues through Aug. 1 with performances Aug. 2 and 3 at the VU Center for the Arts, 1709 Chapel Drive.
The 22nd annual workshop will prepare a production of Shakespeare's "The Two Noble Kinsmen" and introduce children who are at least 8 years old and have not graduated from high school to the basics of theatre performance and production. For information, call (219) 464-5213.
Summer events
A variety of athletic camps, educational programs for youth, religious retreats and other events will draw hundreds of visitors to Valparaiso University's campus this summer.
Events will include the long-standing Light in Thy Light retreat for Lutheran youth, being held for the 25th consecutive year, as well as newer events such as Camp Invention, a week-long program for children that will provide fun, hands-on activities fostering creative thinking.
Among the events being held on campus through August are:
July 18 - 20 n Catholic Youth Xperience Camp, a retreat organized by the Diocese of Gary;
July 21 - 23 n Boys Soccer Camp for high school players aspiring to play at the college level;
July 21 - 24 n Girls Basketball Day Camp for those entering grades 2 through 8;
July 23 - 27 n Universal Cheerleaders Association Cheer Camp;
July 28 - Aug. 1 n Boys Basketball Academy for players ages 8through 14;
Aug. 1 - 5 n Universal Cheerleaders Association Cheer Camp;

'Of Men and Mission'
"Of Men and Mission" art exhibit continues through July 30 at Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources, 1410 Chapel Drive. Commissioned by Lakeshore Public Television, the exhibit features 25 portrait photographs of Northwest Indiana veterans sharing their stories of the war. The exhibit is taking place in conjunction with screenings of Ken Burns' acclaimed documentary "The War" and conversations with several area veterans in June and July. Beginning June 11, screenings of the seven episodes of "The War" will take place at 1:30 p.m. each Wednesday in Christopher Center Room 205, concluding on July 23. Valpo faculty members will interview area World War II veterans at the beginning of the screenings on June 18 and 25 and July 9 and 16.The Christopher Center's summer hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 2 to 10 p.m. Sunday, call (219) 464-5500 for more information.
On display
"Domestic Vision: Twenty-Five Years of the Art of Joel Sheesley" and "Encounters/Encuentros: Tradition and Innovation in the Art of Spain and Latin America" will be on exhibit Aug. 19 through Nov. 23. There will be an opening reception at 7 p.m. Sept. 5 and a gallery talk at 7 p.m. Sept. 24 with Joel Sheesley. The exhibit will be at the Brauer Museum of Art, Center for the Arts, 1709 Chapel Drive. "Domestic Vision" will feature 33 of noted Midwestern artist Joel Sheesley's realistic, allegorical paintings, many of them large-scale. The exhibit is being accompanied by publication of a new full-color book on Sheesley's art. "Encounters/Encuentros" will features works by Hispanic artists from Brauer Museum's permanent collection. Brauer Museum's regular hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Girgenti art
"The Art of Joyce Girgenti" will be on display Aug. 4-29 at the Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources, 1410 Chapel Drive.
