WESTVILLE | Purdue University North Central 2008-09 Odyssey Arts and Cultural Events Series is presenting the exhibit, "On Assignment," a collection of black and white photographs by Rebecca Janes.
"On Assignment" will be on display through December in the PNC Technology Building North Study Lounge and may be viewed Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Janes, freelance photographer and native of LaPorte County, has spent the last 12 years combining her two greatest passions n traveling and photography. She began traveling in her late teens when photography was her hobby and has since become an international photographer.
This exhibit includes photographs that were taken in four different countries n India, the Dominican Republic, Brazil and Bolivia. Her photographs present a vivid representation of the native people going about their lives. Whether the photograph shows a family in the Dominican Republic, a dance troupe in Brazil or elephant keepers in India, Janes captures a candid view into other lives and cultures.
Janes has covered assignments in Mexico, Central America, South America, the Caribbean, South Africa and Southeast Asia. She has traveled to more than 35 countries, capturing a wide spectrum of social, cultural and environmental conditions. She has earned numerous awards and honors and her work has been published in "The New York Times," "The Boston Globe" and other publications.
Janes attended the Southeast Center for Photographic Studies in Daytona Beach and New World School of the Arts in Miami, Fla. She has worked for Miami Metro Magazine, Miami Children's Hospital, Miami Beach Sunpost, American Cancer Society, United Way of Dade County and the Karen Peterson Dancers. Her first international assignment was for Save the Children in Mexico.
She returned to Michigan City seven years ago and continues to work for organizations such as Save the Children, Christian Children's Fund, The Hunger Project, Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, Amnesty International and the International Fund for Animal Welfare.
