CROWN POINT | Embroiled in a legal battle with the city of Gary, its police continue working regular shifts without a 20 percent pay cut.

Lake County Circuit Court Judge Lorenzo Arredondo extended a temporary restraining order late last week that halts a 20 percent, citywide pay cut for Gary officers as well as a shift in hours that the police union said may have hurt the department.

The restraining order has been extended until Sept. 25, union attorney Leo Blackwell said Tuesday.

City attorneys filed an objection to the extension Monday, court records show.

A hearing on the order has been set for 10 a.m. Friday in Arredondo's courtroom. Blackwell said he will argue the order should remain in effect until a new judge accepts the case.

The case will change courtrooms, as requested by city attorneys. Attorneys for both sides were asked to choose from a list of three potential new judges, and the city filed its first removal request Monday.

City attorney Hamilton Carmouche could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
