CALUMET CITY | Residents of Park Harbor Mobile Estates in Calumet City received the gift of cool air earlier this month. Alderman Thaddeus Jones, in conjunction with WMAQ NBC 5 Chicago and Carrier, brought donated air conditioning units and passed them out to thankful residents.
Jones said they were extremely happy to receive the units. "They thanked me and shook my hand many times. It put a smile on my face. We feed the homeless every Sunday at St. Victors Church and this kind of equaled that."
Residents in dire need received the donated units first, Jones said. The goal was to make sure they would have a fresh start for next year, especially if there were hot summer months like this year, Jones said.
"By working with local stations and companies such as Carrier, residents who cannot afford amenities such as having a air condition unit in their home, will be able to get some relief from the heat through the efforts of NBC 5, Carrier and my office," Jones said. He added that units were picked up with a truck donated by Thornton Township Supervisor Frank M. Zuccarelli.
"We hope to continue doing it," Jones said. "It's a great program. It benefits a lot of those who wouldn't be able to afford air conditioning and would go without."
