Car show | Calumet City
Youth Mind Power Organization will have a car wash and barbecue from 5:30 to 7:30 tonight at Wentworth Avenue and Detroit. Events include poetry, music, chess, checkers, art projects, free food, raffles, a basketball free thrown contest and more.

Pooch parade | Homewood
Applications are now available for pet owners to register their dog in the annual pooch parade held at Homewood's Dog Days of Summer. It will take place from noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 16 at Irwin Park in downtown Homewood. This year, the pooch parade will also serve as a fundraiser for area rescue groups participating in the event. At the end of the parade, a raffle will be drawn to determine which group the parade proceeds will go to. Aside from the parade, there will be dog shows, grooming clinics, games for children, food and live entertainment. St. Joseph 18th annual reunion picnic is from noon to 7 p.m. Aug. 10 at the Polish-American Community Fair Grove, 18600 Glenwood-Thornton Road. Ted Tomczak's Take Five will play at 4 p.m. There will also be a 50/50 raffle, jump house, bean bag toss, paddle boats, raffle booth, children's games, pony rides and bingo. Taste | South Holland
The eighth annual Taste of Thornton will take place Aug. 16 at Thornton Township Hall, 333 E. 162nd St. The Chi-Lites will perform, as well as seven time Grammy-winning Gospel artist Darius Brooks. Soundz of Santana will perform Santana's greatest hits and Dennis Stella will rock the crowd with his Elvis tribute. Steppers can dance on the front lawn of the Township Hall, with music from DJs Wali Muhammad and Daryll King.
Food and events will start at 10 a.m. with early bird bingo. Free coffee and doughnuts will be served. Other activities include a car show, arts and crafts, children's games and rides. Cupcake the Clown will paint faces and local food vendors will offer fare.

Lung cancer walk | Chicago
The second Pauline Moraco-Arredondo Lung Cancer Walk & Rally will kick off at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 4 at the William W. Powers State Fish and Wildlife Area, 12949 S. Avenue O. Proceeds from the event will benefit the LUNGevity Foundation, the nation's leading private supporter of lung cancer research. Online registration/donations are recommended but are also available the day of the walk. The first 100 walkers will receive a goodie bag and T-Shirt. Refreshments will be provided to all. Allyson and David Arredondo, of Hobart, started the event to honor David's mother, Pauline. She was diagnosed with lung cancer in April 2004 and died 11 months later.

The Lake County Minority Health Coalition's Covering Kids and Families Program presents the Back to School Health and Fun Fair. PEACH PICKING | Munster
Munster Parks and Recreation Department offers a Tree-Menus Day on Aug. 27 in Eau Claire, Mich. At Tree-Menus Fruit Farm, set out on the trail in a custom-made "folks wagon" (open air, covered, with theater seats) with a guide for a narrated tour. All the necessary containers will be provided to pick peaches. The trip includes a tour, peach picking, catered chicken luncheon, shopping at Tree-Mendous Fruit Farm Market, and motorcoach transportation. The bus leaves at 8:30 a.m. from Centennial Park north parking lot, 9701 Calumet Ave. The fee is $49 for residents, $54 for nonresidents and 448 for Keen-Agers. Tudor Services' fourth annual Golf Outing to support Hoosier Burn Camp is set for Aug. 11 at The Golf Course at Aberdeen, 245 N. Tower Road. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the shotgun start is at 10 a.m. The cost is $100 per golfer and includes 18 holes of golf with cart, lunch and dinner, hole contests, beverage carts, opportunity for skins, awards and door prizes. Hoosier Burn Camp serves Indiana's young people 8 to 18 years old who have suffered the pain and trauma of being caught in a fire.
