HEALTHY KIDS DAY | Hammond

The Hammond Area YMCA hosts its annual Healthy Kids Day/Open House from 10 a.m. to noon April 12 at 7322 Southeastern Ave. This event is free to the public and will provide free healthy snacks, prizes, giveaways, face painting, entertainment, raffles, tours and more. Hammond Police Department representatives will take photos and fingerprint children. There also will be health-related vendors available to better families' lives such as Family Eye Care, Children's Dental Clinic, Chiro One Wellness Center and others.

CROSSROADS | Highland

Crossroads, a free monthly program for seniors, meets at 10:30 a.m. April 10 at the Lake County Public Library's Highland branch, 2841 Jewett St. First Financial Bank, in co-sponsorship with the library, offers the program. Refreshments will be served. Register.

YOGA CLASS | Munster

Munster Parks and Recreation Department offers a yoga class that meets from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesdays, April 8 to June 3, at Community Park Social Center, 8751 Lions Club Drive. Participants can take yoga with a top-notch instructor, increasing their energy and health, massaging their internal organs and muscles at the same time. Bring aq yoga mat. HIPPIE SWIRLS | Hammond

FUSION EXERCISE | Munster

NIA, or Neuromuscular Interactive Action, is a new fusion exercise hitting the fitness world. A class will be offered by the Munster Parks and Recreation Department from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, April 9 to May 28, in the dance room at Wilbur Wright Middle School, 8650 Columbia Ave. It's a mixture of martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. Participants improve muscle tone while increasing mobility. Register in advance.

SPRING HIKE | National Lakeshore

Join a ranger from 1:30 to 3 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday in April and explore the forested dunes for wildflowers and other signs of spring. During the hike, learn how Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is able to support a diversity of plant life. Meet at the Calumet Dune Interpretive Center, on Kemil Road between U.S. 20 and U.S. 12, to carpool to the trailhead. No hike offered April 26.

TEEN MOVIE | Gary

TULIP FESTIVAL | Munster

Munster Parks and Recreation Department and Mid-America Tours offer a trip May 6 to 8 to see gardens full of tulips in Michigan. The trip includes lunch at Cranies Pie Pantry in Saugatuck, a scenic cruise on Make Michigan aboard the Star of Saugatuck, two nights lodging at Radisson Grand Rapids, Windmill Island with more than 100,000 tulips in bloom, Little Netherlands Museum, reserved seats for the Volksparade, dinner at Alpenrose Restaurant, Meijer Sculpture Garden, a tram tour, wood shoemaking and delftware painting, motorcoach transportation, six meals and $15 "Travlchecks." St. Catherine Hospital will offer Keeping Baby Safe and Healthy from 6 to 7:30 p.m. April 9 in the hospital's cafeteria conference room, 4321 Fir St. Pediatrician Dr. Rajaraman Iyer will address such topics as when to call the doctor and nutritional needs of babies. REGION IDOL | Crown Point

Fourth Annual Region Idol Contest will be held at 7 p.m. consecutive Fridays beginning April 11 and ending May 23 at the Hall of Justice, 220 S. Main St. Admission to the auditions, from 7 to 10 p.m. April 3 and 4, and competition nights, is a $5 donation at the door and a $10 donation on the final night of competition. Higher donations will be accepted. Proceeds benefit Multiple Sclerosis Society, Indiana chapter. Since 2005, Region Idol has raised more than $30,000 toward charitable programs. RIDING PROGRAM | Hobart

Exceptional Equestrians Unlimited, a nonprofit charity offering therapeutic horseback riding lessons, is accepting applications for the spring session on a first-come, first-served basis.
