TRACK MEET | Portage
Fifth-graders from the eight Portage Township Schools elementary schools will compete in the annual fifth-grade track meet from 3:45 to 5:30 p.m. today at Portage High School East track, 6450 E. U.S. 6. In case of rain, the track meet will be held May 21. Students will participate in events such as the softball throw, standing long jump, tug of war, 100-meter dash, 60-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash and the 400-meter relay.

YOUTH COMMISSION | Portage
The Portage Youth Commission is looking for new members to replace departing seniors. Any high school students living within the city limits are welcome to apply. Liaison positions are available for students living in South Haven and Ogden Dunes. Applications are available in the main office at Portage High School, 6450 E. U.S. 6, and at the mayor's office at City Hall, 6070 Central Ave. Applications should be returned by May 27. The Portage Youth Commission is a 15-member board that gives youth an opportunity to have a voice in local government regarding the needs and interests of community youths.

STUDENT FARMER'S MARKET | Portage
A Student Farmer's Market is set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 31 in the parking lot at Aylesworth Elementary School, 5910 Central Ave. The event will include live music by Front Porch, flowers and vegetables, arts and crafts, food and drinks, 4-H, a car wash, face painting, Girl Scouts, all-natural foods, jewelry and Purdue University North Central.

TEXAS HOLD 'EM | Portage
Nativity Home and School Association will host an 80-seat Texas Hold Em Tournament on May 24 at Nativity Hall, 2949 Willowcreek Road. Doors open at noon. Play begins at 1 p.m. The $60 buy-In includes tournament entry fee and lunch. Side games are available for a $20 buy-in. Participants must be at least 21 years old. Register at the parish office. School raffle tickets will be available for $1 each, with the drawing during the tournament. The top two raffle prizes are $1,000.

BASKETBALL CAMP | Chesterton
The New Life Wesleyan Basketball Camp will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. May 27 to 30 at the church, 75 E. County Road 1100 North. Dan Dunn, the basketball coach at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, will be camp director. The camp is for children 6 to 14 years old. The cost is $15. Each camper will receive a T-shirt and snacks. MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP AUDITIONS | Valparaiso
The Concert Association of Valparaiso will hold its 2008 Music Scholarship auditions for piano at 7 p.m. June 6 in the Duesenberg Recital Hall at Valparaiso University, U.S. 30 at Sturdy Road. Eligible students must attend a Porter County High School; graduating seniors are eligible. Applicants will play two works, movements or excerpts in contrasting styles (no more than 10 minutes total) of at least ISSMA Group I caliber. There is a prize of $400 for first place, $150 for second, and $50 for third; monies are to be applied toward the study of piano. Applications are due May 30.

ROBOTICS CAMP | Portage
Space is limited to 24 participants in this summer's Portage High School Robotics Camp, to be held June 9 to 12 at the high school, 6450 E. U.S. 6. Tuition is $150 for the first child in a family and $125 for each additional child. Included in the tuition is a state-up kit with parts for a robot, snacks and a T-shirt. This robotics, science and technology camp is for youngsters in fifth through eighth grades. Proceeds from the summer camp will be donated to the Portage High School Robotics Club. Checks should be made payable to Portage High School and mailed to Bryan Lochmondy, Portage High School, 6450 E. U.S. 6, Portage, IN 46368.

KIDSCAMP | Portage
Registration for KidsCamp will be open from 5 to 7 p.m. May 22 and June 4 at the Portage Boys & Girls Club, 5895 Evergreen Ave. KidsCamp serves children entering kindergarten through sixth grade. The hours of operation are 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Activities include swimming, boating, fishing, field trips and special events such as a magic show.

BRITISH SOCCER CAMP | Portage
The Portage Township YMCA and the Portage parks department are presenting a British Soccer Camp June 23 to 27 at Imagination Glen Park, 2275 McCool Road. Ages 3 and 4 meet from 9 to 10 a.m.; the cost is $60. Children 4 and 5 years old meet from 10 a.m. to noon; the cost is $75. Youths 6 to 9 years old meet from 9 a.m. to noon; the cost is $100. Children 10 to 14 years old meet from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.; the cost is $100. The fee includes a ball and T-shirt. Applications and registration are available at the YMCA, 3100 Willowcreek Road.

CHILDREN'S ART CAMP | Valparaiso
The Art Barn School of Art, 695 N. County Road 400 East, will offer children's art camps this summer. The cost is $115 and includes supplies and snacks. The camps are for children 5 to 10 years old. Camp meets from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Camp dates includes June 16 to 20, June 23 to 27, July 21 to 25 and July 28 to Aug. 1.

LADIES FISHING | Portage
Bass Pro Shops will host a five-class program geared toward the beginner adult fisherwoman. This introduction to fishing class will meet on four Wednesday nights and will end with a day of shore fishing to show off what has been learned. The class will meet at 7 p.m. June 4, 11, 18 and 25 at Bass Pro Shops, 6425 Daniel Burnham Drive. The final class will meet at a local lake for on-water shore fishing and a cookout. The location and date will be determined before the last class. This is a free class; however, space is limited. Participants must be at least 18 years old.

KIDSCAMP REGISTRATION | South Haven
KidsCamp registration is now open at the South Haven Boys & Girls Club, 723 Long Run Road. Registration is being accepted from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. and from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. KidsCamp opens June 5 in South Haven.

PORT-A-PIT CHICKEN | Valparaiso
The Visiting Nurse Association of Porter County and the family of Tricia Marie Simpson Russell, a nurse at the VNA until her death, will hold a Nelson's Port-a-Pit Chicken fundraiser from 4 to 7 p.m. June 13 in the Kmart parking lot, 2801 Calumet St. Advance tickets are available, and the cost for a grilled chicken half is $5. Proceeds will go to a memorial scholarship to assist individual nursing students to advance their education. Scholarship applications are available by contacting the VNA or visiting the VNA Web site at www.vnaportercounty.org, and are due by Feb. 1.

WHEELCHAIR SAFETY | Portage
Laura Jaugilas, a mobility specialist with Low Cost Mobility, will talk about safety while using wheelchairs, electric wheelchairs and scooters during a program at 2 p.m. today at Miller's Senior Living Community, 5911 Lute Road. This program is free and open to the public. Reservations are requested as space is limited. Refreshments will be served.

SEND TEACHERS TO SCHOOL | Portage
During May, customers to Bass Pro Shops, 6425 Daniel Burnham Drive, can make $2 donations to support The American Wilderness Leadership School in the Bridger-Teton National Forest near Jackson, Wyo. They also can nominate a teacher to attend the school during Bass Pro Shops week, July 30 to Aug. 6. SCI Foundation, which runs the school, will choose one teacher from each of the Bass Pro Shops stores across the country to attend. Bass Pro Shops will pay for that teacher to attend, and the teacher will receive continuing education credit or advanced degree credit for completing the school. Nomination forms are available at the Portage store.

HONORING THE DEAD | Chesterton
The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 905 of Porter County will hold its annual Memorial Day service at 2 p.m. May 25 at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, Ind. 49 and Porter Road, behind the EMS station. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Stanley Lelek.

MEMORIAL DAY PARADE | Portage
Portage American Legion Post 260 is accepting entries for its annual Memorial Day Parade and services to be held May 26. The parade will assemble at 11 a.m. at the Portage Mall on Central Avenue and will commence at noon. A memorial service will follow the parade and will be held at Calvary Cemetery, 2701 Willowdale Road. The public is invited. Following the memorial service, the public is invited to enjoy refreshments at the Legion post, 5675 Mulberry Ave. Entries are due May 22.

CAR SHOW | Chesterton
All cars and bikes are invited to join the Chesterton Bike and Car Show, to be held from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May 31 at the old Chesterton High School, Fifth and Porter Avenue. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. Registration fees are $15 per car and $10 per bike. The event includes food, a 50/50 raffle and T-shirts to the first 100 car and bikes registered for the event. Awards include 35 trophies and three best-in-show honors. This event will benefit the Phil "Tom" Criswell Foundation. Half of the money from the 50/50 raffle will go to the winner and the other half will be donated to the foundation in honor of Criswell, who is fighting esophageal cancer and is undergoing radiation and chemotherapy. Chesterton Moose Lodge 1623 will host a spaghetti dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. May 31 at the lodge, 602 Broadway. All proceeds will go to the Criswell fund. The cost for the dinner is $5 for adults and $3 for children 5 years and younger.

COFFEE HOUSE | Portage
Deborah A. Hampton, music minister with Singing Praises To The Lord, will present a spring dessert coffee house at 6 p.m. May 31 at Grace Church of the Nazarene Family Life Center, 5360 Clem Road. The event will include God's Grace Gang Puppet Ministry, desserts, games and other surprises. A free-will offering will be taken. Refreshments will be available for purchase.
