Indiana State Police on Tuesday arrested a Chicago man suspected of fatally shooting his estranged wife and wounding her teenage son earlier in the day.
Gail Bullock was arrested without incident about 2:20 p.m. in Jasper County near the intersection of Interstate 65 and Ind. 10, a Indiana State Police news release said.
Police said Bullock kept authorities at bay in a house in the 8200 block of Francisco Avenue in Chicago, where he is accused of shooting and killing a 41-year-old woman and shooting her 14-year-old son just after noon.
Both victims were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where the woman was pronounced dead and the boy was treated for a gunshot wound to the mouth, Chicago police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.
"The individual in custody is the estranged husband of the female victim," Mirabelli said. "She and her son went to pick up the mail at the home, and the child it looks like was shot inside the home and mother was shot as she tried to flee the home."
Sometime before police entered the home in midafternoon the suspect fled in a blue Infinity sedan, Mirabelli said.
"We understand initially (he was) there inside (the) home and was communicating via phone to officers," he said. "We obtained intelligence and description of vehicle he was in and with that intelligence were able to track him down at that location."
With reason to believe that Bullock was heading toward Indiana, state police assisted the Chicago Police Department with a response to Interstate 65, where they observed a vehicle matching the suspect's traveling southbound at the 237 mile marker.
After following the vehicle, the driver pulled over for an unknown reason and stopped on the shoulder at the 231 mile marker.
Bullock remains in Indiana State Police custody.
Advocate Christ personnel did not give the boy's condition Tuesday night.
