Recital series
Valparaiso University's 2007-2008 recital series will feature performances by numerous university music faculty and students, and a number of guest artists and ensembles. Valparaiso University is at E. Morthland Drive (U.S. 30) and Sturdy Road.
Unless otherwise indicated, the following recitals and concerts are free and open to the public:
April 26 | 7:30 p.m. Luce Concert Band and Small High School and Community Band Festival at the chapel;
May 1 | 7:30 p.m. faculty recital featuring Lorraine Brugh and Joseph Bognar on organ at the chapel; and
Map 17 | 6:30 p.m. Senior Honors Recital featuring several of Valparaiso's graduating music students at the Center for the Arts.

VOLTS
What: Valparaiso Organization for Learning and Teaching Seniors offers their spring session of meetings. Annual dues are $20 per person or $35 per couple per year. VOLTS is a group for seniors who are interested in continuing to learn and in sharing their ideas and areas of expertise with others. VU faculty or other professionals make presentations on a variety of topics. Participants are retired or above the age of 60. April 28: "South Shore Line's History and Projected Future," presented by Mitchell Markovitz, historian and poster artist, Urschel Hall 202, 2 p.m.;
May 1: Current events discussion, Christopher Center Community Room, 9 a.m.;
May 5: "Reflections Upon Driving into the West," presented by Dr. Alan Harre, University president, location and time to be announced.
Art student exhibit
Valparaiso University Art Student Exhibition continues through May 11 at the Brauer Museum of Art, Center for the Arts, 1709 Chapel Drive. Exhibitions and related events are free. This annual exhibition features artwork in a variety of media by the University's art students. Brauer Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Group tours may be arranged by calling (219) 464-5365. 'The Heidi Chronicles'
"The Heidi Chronicles" will be performed at 8 tonight and May 2; 2 p.m. April 26 and May 3 and 7 p.m. April 27 and May 4 at the VU Center for the Arts, 1709 Chapel Drive. Cost is $15 for adults and $10 for senior citizens and students. Valparaiso's theatre season will conclude with Wendy Wasserstein's Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning play "The Heidi Chronicles," a poignant and humorous look at the Baby Boomer generation. Starting with the turbulence of the 1960s and ending in the mainstream of the 1980s, Wasserstein's play follows art historian Heidi Holland's coming of age as she searches for fulfillment and a sense of identity. Art faculty exhibit
The Valparaiso University Art Faculty exhibit continues through May 11 at the Brauer Museum of Art, Center for the ARts, 1709 Chapel drive. This annual exhibition features artwork in a variety of media by the University's art faculty. May 3 n The museum will be open until 7:30 p.m. in conjunction with a concert by Valparaiso's Symphony Orchestra;

Art on display
"Popping out, blending in: identities defined?" is on display through May 18; coffee hour with Chicago artist Sergio Gomez at 7 p.m. April 30 at Brauer Museum of Art, Center for the Arts, 1709 Chapel Drive. Lindsey Gargas, a senior art history and museum studies major from Crown Point, selected works from Brauer Museum's permanent collection that examine notions of personal, social, racial, ethical and cultural identity. Brauer Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Group tours may be arranged by calling (219) 464-5365. Japan in photos
"Cultural Memory in Japan" continues through June 30 at Mueller Hall, 1300 Chapel Drive. Featured in the exhibit are photogrpahs taken by eight Valparaiso students who participated in an 11-day research trip to Japan in early March. The 17 photographs represent the grandeur of both contemporary and historical Japan, as well as highlight the aesthetic attention to detail found in Japan's everyday life. Mueller Hall is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Abstract art
Abstract art from the Brauer Museum of Art's permanent collection is on display May 17 through Aug. 4 at the Brauer Museum of Art, Center for the Arts, 1709 Chapel Drive. Abstract works in a variety of media will be featured in this exhibit, including many which will have their first public showing at Brauer Museum. Water colors

Student recitals

April 26 n Senior Charles Burch will perform a tenor recital featuring works by Purcell, Britten, Faure and Verdi and senior Ashley Grimshaw will perform a soprano recital featuring works by Puccini, Weston and Graves at 5 p.m. in the Center for the Arts.
April 29 n The University's Horn Quartet, Guitar Ensemble, Woodwind Quintet, String Quartet and "Heavy Metal" Brass Quartet will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for the Arts.
May 2 n Senior Chacriyar Chhuon will perform a baritone research featuring works by Bach, Bizet, Mozart and Ravel at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for the Arts.
Band festival
Fifth annual Small High School Band Festival and 13th Annual Community Band Festival is April 26. The Small High School Band Festival begins at 3 p.m. and the Community Band Festival begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Chapel of the Resurrection, 1600 Chapel Drive. These annual concerts will feature the University's Luce Concert Band and the Valparaiso Community/University Concert Band performing with high school and community bands from the region.
