RESOURCE EXPO | Merrillville
Alzheimer's Association will host its first Resource and Education Expo from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 21 at the University of Phoenix, 8401 W. Ohio St. There will be information on legal issues, home health care, home equipment and services, grief management, alternative placement options and the basics of Alzheimer's Disease. Light refreshments will be served and there will be massages available, hourly speakers, prizes and giveaways.

MEN'S BASKETBALL | Crown Point
Crown Point Parks and Recreation Department offers two men's basketball leagues playing at CP Health and Fitness, 1516 N. Main St. An Open League is open to men ages 16 and up with play on Tuesday nights beginning May 20. The Over 30 League is open to men 30 and older on Monday nights beginning May 19. Game times for both leagues will be each hour from 6 to 10 p.m. The fee is $300 per team plus an individual fee of $25 for Crown Point residents and $35 for nonresidents. The fee will fund licensed officials and a 7-game schedule plus a single elimination tournament. Teams must register by May 14.

BENEFIT NIGHT | Crown Point
A benefit for the family of Kristen Zubrick will be held from 6 to 11 .m. May 17 at the Old Courthouse on the downtown square. Dinner and drinks, a band and a live auction will be included. Zubrick is a recent graduate of Lowell High School who was recently diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. She has since undergone three major surgeries to remove the tumor and is preparing for future treatment. The mounting medical bills are a strain on the family and this event is being planned by Sherry Baugh and Laura Slusarczyk to offer some relief. Tickets, available at the door, are $25 for adults and $10 for children. Anyone who would like to donate but is unable to attend can contribute to a Karing for Kristen fund set up at Peoples Bank. Also, donated items are also being accepted for the auction.

HEALTH SCREENING | Merrillville
A free health screening offered by the Everest College School of Practical Nursing and Massage Therapy is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 21 on the fifth floor at Chase Bank, 8585 Broadway. Free blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol screening will be available, as well as free chair massages and information about strokes, heart attacks, smoking cessation and cancer.

GREEN HOME TOUR | Crown Point
Kristin MacPherson, a Master Manager with EcoQuest International, will demonstrate a new product that replaces laundry detergent at an Eco Green Home Tour from 1 to 3 p.m. May 16 and 17 and 1 to 4 p.m. May 18 at 12553 Washington St. This technology was developed by NASA and recently The Space Foundation announced that EcoQuest International's Fresh Air purification and Laundry Pure Green Technologies have been officially recognized as Certified Space Technologies. The Fresh Air by EcoQuest uses technology originally developed in cooperation with NASA to clean the air in spacecraft. COOKING CLASS | Crown Point
The Expanded Food and Nutrition Program of the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service will offer an eight-week cooking class starting May 20 in the kitchen area of the South Lake Resource Center, 1450 E. Joliet St. Participants will learn how to make their food dollar last longer while preparing quick, tasty and healthy meals. Participants will receive a handbook of tips and recipes, and an EFNAP graduation certificate from Purdue University. The classes will last about 90 minutes. Children are welcome to attend with their parents. There is no charge, but seating is limited. The classes are cosponsored by the Expanded Food and Nutrition Program, Purdue University and South Lake County Community Services.

PARKINSON'S LUNCHEON | Merrillville
The fifth annual luncheon to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research is set for noon to 4 p.m. May 17 in the Celebrity East Ballroom at the Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza, U.S. 30 and Interstate 65. Tickets cost $25 per person, with all the money raised going to the foundation. The luncheon includes a raffle, auctions and door prizes for guests as well as a meal prepared by the hotel's chef. A deejay will provide music for entertainment and dancing.

BE A VOLUNTEER | Crown Point
St. Anthony Hospice, 203 Franciscan Drive, is seeking volunteers to help patients with a life-limiting illness and their family members by providing companionship, offering respite for caregivers, running errands and performing chores as well as providing assistance with hospice public relations, fund raising and clerical work.

RELAY FOR LIFE | Crown Point
Cold Stone Creamery at 112th and Broadway has partnered with Team Destination Cure for a series of fundraisers in May to benefit the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. "Ice Cream Socials" will be held at the restaurant from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, May 15 and 29. Twenty percent of sales by those who mention the fundraiser will be donated to the team. Also, Beef O'Brady's Restaurant at 107th and Broadway, will donate 15 percent of all sales to the team from 4 to 8 p.m. May 22.

HOSPICE GALA | Hobart
The Friends of Hospice, the fundraising auxiliary for Hospice of the Calumet Area, will host its Seeds of Hope gala May 21 at Avalon Manor on U.S. 30. The annual event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a silent auction featuring a wide variety of items donated by local individuals and merchants, followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m. The 2008 honoree is Ruthellyn Bobak of Munster, a 19-year member of Hospice of the Calumet Area's Board of Directors. Tickets cost $75 per person and may be bought by calling Chris Dow at (219) 922-2732. Proceeds benefit Hospice of the Calumet Area, a 27 year-old nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life through compassionate care for individuals and families facing an end-of-life illness.

SENIOR HEALTH | Merrillville
Lake County Public Library will host its Second Annual Health Fair from 1 to 4 p.m. May 22 in the lower level meeting rooms at the central library, 1919 W. U.S. 30. This year's focus on senior citizens will include a wide variety of displays and vendors, from natural foods to physician information to ukuleles. Learn how to find medical information from the library's databases, find out about recommended websites and print materials. Speakers will address the importance of staying active and the health benefits of pets. The afternoon will include the opportunity to get a massage and enjoy healthy snacks.

BOWLING BENEFIT | Dyer
A bowling fundraiser for the Avon Walk for breast Cancer is set for 10 p.m. to midnight May 16 at Stardust Bowl III, 1330 Sheffield Ave. The donation is $30 per person and may be paid at the door. The fee includes candlelight bowling, a ticket for a drink, shoes and music. A silent auction and 50-50 raffle also are planned.
