LOWELL | It was a night for the Democrats in this south Lake County community as they claimed each of the town's three council races.

Incumbent Councilman Don Huseman, D-1st, handily won over Republican newcomer Melissa Cummins.

"I feel fortunate, and I'm glad for those that came out to vote for me," Huseman said. "I would have missed helping the town."

Huseman said he is most excited to be part of shaping the town as growth comes knocking at its door.

"I see a bunch of development in the future," he said, adding that it's key to put in place a process for developers that follows the council's vision.

Cummins said she was OK with the results.

"I'm a novice candidate," she said. "I hope to run again in four years."

Democrat John Alessia, principal for Lowell Middle School, easily won his first race for the Town Council. He topped Republican opponent Andrew LeRoy. As a former Lowell police commissioner, he's no stranger to town government.

"I'm just happy to be elected. Now, the hard work starts to make this a better town for our children," Alessia said.

In his campaign, Alessia opposed the proposed Illiana Toll Road.

"One of the many reasons I choose to live in this community is because of its small town appeal. ... The Toll Road would rob us of what we cherish on a daily basis," he said.

Alessia also said that the selection of a new town attorney, responsible growth and greater attention to infrastructure needs of older parts of the town were key issues for him.

LeRoy, a Beecher, Ill., police officer, previously served as a village trustee in Sheldon, Ill.

After moving to Lowell in January, LeRoy said he felt good about the number that turned out to vote for him.

"I'd like to stay involved," he said, noting that he might find involvement on a local board or commission.

Councilman David Gard, D-5th, ran unopposed.
