INDIANAPOLIS | A car speeding the wrong way on a highway caused a head-on crash that killed two people Thursday morning, police said.

State police say alcohol might have been a factor in the crash that closed Interstate 465 for 3.5 hours but did not elaborate.

A white Buick speeding west struck an eastbound Ford SUV about 4:30 a.m. on Indianapolis' north side, troopers said.

The driver of the Buick and a passenger in the SUV were killed. The SUV driver was taken by helicopter to Methodist Hospital in critical condition, said state police spokesman Sgt. Ray Poole.

Investigators will do toxicology tests to determine whether alcohol was involved, Poole said. Troopers did not know why the Buick was driving the wrong way or where the Ford SUV was heading.

"Unfortunately it was at the wrong place at the wrong time," he said.

Dispatchers and state Department of Transportation officials saw the crash on traffic cameras, which don't record, Poole said.

"There's no way of retaining it or getting it back," he said.
