TRY YOGA | Merrillville

Merrillville Parks and Recreation Department offers Yoga Level I classes from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursdays, beginning today at the Pruzin Center, 5750 Tyler St. This program is for those just beginning yoga or with a little experience, and works on every part of the body, including massaging and stimulating internal organs. Yoga can improve many health conditions, including obesity, nervousness, anxiety, fatigue, mental clarity and circulation. Cost is $20 for residents and $25 for nonresidents for five weekly sessions. KEENAGER BREAKFAST | St. John

Cedar Lake Keenagers will meet for breakfast at 9 a.m. Sept. 2 at the Aspen Restaurant, 9141 U.S. 41. Interested people 55 and over are welcome to join the group.

MUSIC JAM | Roselawn

A country, gospel and bluegrass music jam with Betty Tetzlaff and friends will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 5 at Roselawn American Legion Post 238, Ind. 10 between Interstate 65 and Ind. 55. Fish fry will be available from 5 to 8 p.m. A large dance floor is available; no smoking, please.

PANCAKE BREAKFAST | Hobart

A pancake breakfast will be held from 7 to 9 a.m. Sept. 6 at the Hobart Masonic Lodge, 219 Center St. The menu includes pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, bacon and a beverage for $6. Children 9 and younger eat free.

PORK CHOP DINNER | Merrillville

Ryder Council 4047 Knights of Columbus will hold its annual pork chop dinner from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (or until sold out) Sept. 7 at St. Andrew Church, 801 W. 73rd Ave. Cost is $8 for adults and $2.50 for children 11 and younger for a grilled pork chop, vegetable, salad and beverage. Homemade desserts will also be available. Carry-outs will be available.

WELCOME FEST | Crown Point

Members and guests are invited to the annual Welcome Fest of the South Lake branch of the American Association of University Women at 6 p.m. Sept. 10 at the home of Dana Sabik, 691 Davis Court. All woman with an associate degree or higher, or the equivalent in work experience, are welcome. AAUW was founded in 1883 to promote equity for women, education, self-development and positive societal change. Dinner is gratis, but a reservation is needed.

TOUCH OF ELEGANCE | Hobart

St. Mary Medical Center Auxiliary will host its ninth annual Touch of Elegance Luncheon at noon Sept. 13 at Avalon Manor, 3550 E. U.S. 30. The event features the easy listening music of Charlie Blum and Friends from the Star Plaza along with gourmet food, door prizes and a cash raffle. SLAVONIA BAND | Merrillville

Croatian Sons Lodge 170 of the Croatian Fraternal Union will sponsor an evening of entertainment at 7 p.m. Sept. 4 by the Slavonia Band from Zupanja, Croatia with vocalist Stjepan Jersek at the Croatian Center, 8550 Taft St. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children at the door. The band, comprised of six instrumentalists and a male vocalist, has been chosen for the CFU Cultural Tour for 2008.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness offers a Family-to-Family class for relatives of the seriously mentally ill. The next session meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Fridays starting Sept. 7 for 12 weeks. Classes take place at the Southlake Center for Mental Health, 8555 Taft St. Register in advance.

VFW Auxiliary Unit 6841 is hosting a New Officers Welcoming Party at 2 p.m. Sept. 6 at the post home, 17401 Morse St. Members are urged to come out to meet the all-new slate of officers and get re-acquainted. "Crossing the Bridge: Maintaining Connections with Persons in Late Stages of Alzheimer's Disease" will take place Aug. 29 in meeting rooms B & D at Lake County Public Library, 1919 W. 81st Ave. The program will focus on understanding the later stages of Alzheimer's disease/advanced dementia and discuss ways for families to maintain meaningful connections with their loved ones, even when they are no longer able to verbally communicate. Although classes are free, registration is required.

CHINESE CONSUL AT LUNCH | Gary

Gary Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly membership luncheon at noon Sept. 8 at the Genesis Convention Center, One Genesis Center Plaza. Maoming Chu, deputy consul general of China, will be the guest speaker. Last May, representatives from the Gary area joined Mayor Rudy Clay on a trade mission to China. The results included a sister city relationship with the City of Fuxin, a sister university relation between Ivy Tech Community College and the University of Fuxin, and an opportunity for investments by Chinese companies in Gary. CONTINUING ED AWARDS | Hobart

Hobart Epsilon Zeta chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa, Inc. is accepting applications for two Continuing Education scholarships. The $1500 scholarships will be awarded at the chapter's Annual Style Show on Nov. 9. To qualify, applicants must have a high school diploma and be returning to further their education after at least a five-year absence from school. Applicants should be well-rounded individuals active in their communities. All applications must be postmarked by Sept. 30.
