MARKHAM | R&B singer R. Kelly's nephew has pleaded not guilty to armed robbery charges in Calumet City.
Brayel Kelly, 16, of Calumet City, was arraigned in 6th District Circuit Court in Markham on Tuesday, Tandra Simonton said. Cook County Judge Michelle Simmons scheduled his next court date for Jan. 23, she said.
Brayel Kelly has been charged as an adult with attempted murder, attempted armed robbery and aggravated discharge of a firearm, Calumet City police Capt. Dan Zorzi said. His bond was set at $200,000.
Brayel Kelly is accused of trying to rob a barber at gunpoint on Nov. 6 at Marvelous Cuts Barbershop at 804 Burnham Ave. after getting a haircut, said Andy Conklin, a spokesman for the Cook County state's attorney's office,
"Upon completion of the haircut, (Brayel) Kelly stood and pointed a handgun at the victim and demanded money and jewelry from the victim," Conklin said. "The victim then put the requested items in a bag provided to him by Kelly, and (the victim) displayed his own handgun in self-defense, at which point Kelly fired one gunshot directly at him. The victim returned fire, striking Kelly one time. He fled the store and was located by responding officers a few blocks away."
Brayel Kelly suffered a gunshot wound to the back.
