MAKE IT TAKE IT | Hobart

Hobart Parks and Recreation Department offers a Make It Take It Scrap Booking Class from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. April 14 at the Hobart Community Center, 111 E. Old Ridge Road. Led by Kathy Allen, participants will complete a project to take home at a cost of $20, including all materials. Call to register.

THINK COLLEGE | Merrillville

Area colleges, including Indiana Wesleyan, University of Phoenix, Indiana Tech and Brown Mackie, will have representatives at a Business After Hours event from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. today, hosted by AmeriClean at 3198 E. 83rd Place. Learn about educational opportunities, how to enhance job skills and degree programs. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.

WINE & FOOD TASTING | Merrillville

Merrillville Education Foundation's sixth annual Wine and Food Tasting will be held at 7 p.m. April 18 at The Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza, Interstate 65 and U.S. 30. "A World of Food and Wine" features wines from around the world with accompanying foods. The Merrillville High School Vocalteens and members of the MHS orchestra will perform. Several prizes will be awarded. Tickets are $40 each or two for $75 and may be purchased at any Merrillville school, the administration center, or the Merrillville Chamber of Commerce. The event raises funds to provide grants directly to Merrillville teachers to promote innovation and excellence in classroom instruction.

SUMMER SCHOOL | Crown Point

Crown Point High School is hold registration for summer school classes through April 11. Students can enroll in physical education, government, economics, algebra, pre-algebra, English 9 and English Lab. Registration forms can be picked up at Crown Point High School, Taft and Wheeler middle schools, St. Mary Catholic Community School and Trinity Lutheran School, all in Crown Point. They must be completed and mailed by April 11.

ROUNDUP NIGHT | Crown Point

Kindergarten Roundup Night will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran School, 250 S. Indiana Ave., with an information meeting for parents of children eligible for kindergarten. The school is accepting applications for its full-day kindergarten program. Interested families can visit the school, tour the classrooms and meet the teachers. Trinity's day school is associated with Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, educating children from preschool age through grade 8.

TEACHER OF THE YEAR | Lowell

Each year Tri-Creek School Corporation honors one elementary teacher and one secondary teacher as Teachers of the Year. Nominations from the community are welcome to honor a teacher who has made an impact on the life of students, gone "above and beyond," or created an exciting learning environment. SPRING SKY | Merrillville

The Merrillville Community Planetarium presents "The Spring Sky," a public program, at 7:30 p.m. April 11, 18, 19, 25 and 26 at the planetarium in Clifford Pierce Middle School, 199 E. 70th Ave. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children. Seating is limited and should be reserved. Large groups can arrange for a private show. No one will be admitted after the program starts. Some of the bright constellations visible during the early evenings of spring include Gemini the Twins, Canis Minor, Leo the Lion and Bootes the Herdsman. Also, learn to find Mars and Saturn in the evening sky. The planetarium's gift shop will be open, and an outdoor observing session will be held, weather permitting.

STORY TIME | Crown Point

Preschool Story Time for children 3 to 5 and a parent residing in the Eisenhower Elementary School district is being offered from 2:45 to 3:25 p.m. Thursdays, April 10 and 24 and May 8 and 22 in the school library, 1450 S. Main St. Each session will include stories and a developmental lesson, and take-home materials will be provided. There is no cost, but registration is required. The topic April 10 is "Fun with Language and Math Manipulatives."

PETER PAN BALLET | Crete

Indiana Youth Ballet will present "Peter Pan," a storybook ballet, in the Milton Payton Performing Arts Center at Crete-Monee High School, 1515 W. Exchange. School shows, pen to senior citizen groups, will be offered at 10 a.m. and at noon April 9, 10 and 11. Public performances will be at 2 and 7 p.m. April 12 and at 2 p.m. April 13. It is a fantasy adventure in which a boy and his guests travel to an island inhabited by lost boys who never want to grow up. They encounter pirates, mermaids and Indians for an exciting and magical escapade. More than 125 young dancers from Northwest Indiana and Illinois bring this story to life on stage.

SWIM SKILLS | Merrillville

Youths 11 to 14 with the ability to swim and complete basic swimming rescue skills can participate in a American Red Cross GuardStart Program from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, July 7 to 30 at Deep River Waterpark, 9001 E. U.S. 30. Cost is $80 for a season pass holder and $100 for others and includes an activity book with a progress passport, iron-on transfer stickers, folders for organizing activities, whistle, visor, and a hot dog lunch each day. Students will received instruction in water safety, public relations, facility operations, water exercise, teamwork, leadership skills, basic work skills, life guarding skills, first aid, and CPR. Pick up a registration form at the waterpark from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays or call (219) 947-7850 ext. 604 and ask for one to be mailed. LEARN TO SWIM | Merrillville

Deep River Waterpark will offer a Learn to Swim course for children 4 to 10 that teaches swimming basics as well as water safety from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 17 to July 10, or Saturdays, June 7 to July 26. LAWN CARE | Schererville, Cedar Lake

Nikky Witkowski, horticulture extension educator with the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service Office, will lead a program to help residents identify problems with their lawns or landscape plants at 6 p.m. April 10 at the Lake County Public Library's Dyer-Schererville branch, 1001 W. Lincoln Highway, or at 6:30 p.m. April 21 at the Cedar Lake branch, 10010 W. 133rd Ave. The programs are free and will include information about how to help lawns recover from damage or how to replace lawns if the damage is severe.

TRIKE-A-THON | Hobart

Annual Trike-A-Thon for St. Jude Children's Hospital will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. April 11 at Jubilee Child Care, 415 N. Hobart Road. Children 2 and older who have studied about bike safety and helping sick children have gathered pledges and will ride through the parking lot set up as a neighborhood with houses, cars, street signs and a stop light. The event annually raises about $2,000 for the cause.

HOMEBUYER EXPO | Merrillville

An informative and free Homebuyer's Expo will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. April 12 at Moke Realty Inc., 295 E. 61st Ave. Local, licensed lenders will be available to answer questions about the lending process. Home inspectors will be available to answer questions about home inspections, why they are important, and things to look for when buying a home. Refreshments will be provided and door prizes will be given out throughout the day.

HORSE SEMINAR | Crown Point

A Sport Horse in Hand Seminar will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 12 at Cedar Point Horse Park, 14516 Reeder Road. Limited to 10 outside horses to be evaluated and worked in hand, topics to be discussed include sport horse judging criteria, rules and demonstrations of "in hand" on "The Triangle" and "The V."
