HIGHLAND | The keen eye of off-duty Cpl. Linda Potesta interrupted an attempted home burglary and led to the apprehension of two Chicago males by Highland and Munster police on Wednesday.

Potesta, who was driving in her private car about 10:14 a.m. in the 9400 block of Parkway Drive, noticed two suspicious males trying to tamper with the back door and window of one of the houses.

"One of the suspects observed her watching them and they departed the yard," a police report said. The suspects left in a green Ford minivan that had been stolen from The Community Hospital in Munster late Tuesday night.

Potesta began following the van as it ran stop signs. As Highland squad cars joined the pursuit, the van entered Munster on Fran Lin Parkway. The drivers ran a red light to enter Ridge Road, and Munster officers joined the chase before the vehicle was stopped on the front lawn of a house on Ridge just west of Columbia Avenue.

Highland officers arrested the passenger, Issac L. Bryant, 20, 644 E. 92nd Place. Munster police arrested the driver, a 16-year-old Chicago male, and turned him over to Highland officers.

Highland police said both may face charges of attempted burglary, possession of stolen property and resisting law enforcement.

"It's just another case of our off-duty officers being vigilant and watching out for everyone," Highland Deputy Cmdr. George Georgeff said Thursday.
