CROWN POINT | Curtis Washington admitted he shot and killed 19-year-old David Soto following a 2005 argument regarding Soto's car, Lake Criminal Court record show.

Washington, 21, pleaded guilty Friday to felony voluntary manslaughter for the Sept. 5, 2005, death. He originally was charged with murder but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge under an agreement with Lake County prosecutors.

The Gary man shot Soto in an alley behind Georgia Street in Gary, court records state.

Washington and Adrian Anguiano, who also was charged with murder, had borrowed Soto's car prior to the argument, court records indicate. Soto tried to get his car back, but Anguiano didn't want to immediately return the car.

Soto and Anguiano argued, then Soto climbed into the driver's seat of his car. Anguiano handed a gun to Washington, then got into the passenger's seat.

Washington admitted Friday that he walked up to the driver's side of Soto's car and shot Soto three times, court records state.

By pleading guilty, Washington clipped 55 years of his potential maximum prison sentence.

He now faces a maximum of 10 years in prison, according to the terms of the plea.

Washington's case is set for Nov. 21 on acceptance of plea and sentencing.

Anguiano pleaded guilty in 2006 to felony assisting a criminal, court records show. He is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 3.
