ASTRONAUT BIOGRAPHER | Highland

Crossroads meets at 10:30 a.m. June 12 at the Lake County Public Library's Highland branch, 2841 Jewett St. This month's topic is Tragedy at Pad 34: Gus Grissom and the Apollo 1 Fire. Indiana historian and author Ray Boomhower will explore the Apollo 1 disaster. Boomhower wrote a biography of the Indiana-born Grissom, "The Lost Astronaut." He will sell copies of the book and autograph them. First Financial Bank, in co-sponsorship with the Highland branch library, hosts this free monthly program for seniors that is open to the public. MEN OF VALOR | Hammond

Eta Kappa Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority presents its sixth annual men of Valor awards program at 5:30 p.m. June 13 at Dynasty Banquets, 4141 Calumet Ave. The group, which as served the East Chicago/Hammond area for 48 years, will recognize men in the arts. Tickets cost $40 for adults and $25 for children 12 and younger and should be reserved. The sorority will have a centennial celebration in July in Washington, D.C.

BLOOD DRIVE | St. John

An American Red Cross blood drive is set for 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. June 9 at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 717, 10400 W. 93rd Ave. The public is welcome. Donors can enter a regionwide drawing for a grill package worth $1,250. Donors must be in good health.

Wings & Wheels | Lansing

Celebrate the golden age of the airplane and automobile at Wings & Wheels June 8 at Lansing Municipal Airport. An all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast is from 7 to 11 a.m. Guest speakers appear from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Ford Hangar. Scheduled speakers are Clarence Hess, a lifelong pilot, who will discuss his experiences flying on special assignment in World War II and the Korean War; Patty Eidam, vice president of Lansing Historical Society, who will discuss the significance of the airport and Ford Hangar; and Robert Malkas, Lansing Municipal Airport manager, who will discuss modern history and the airport's future. Lunch is from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Visitors will see antique and historical aircraft, a large display of Ford Model As and Model Ts.

Free back screenings will be available from noon to 4 p.m. June 12 and 19 at the Hammond Clinic's Family Wellness Center, 9800 Valparaiso Drive. The screenings will be done by a physical therapist. Advance registration is required.

HOMETOWN DAYS | Crown Point

Greater Crown Pont Chamber of Commerce kicks off Hometown Festival Days with its annual corn roast from 4 to 11 p.m. June 13. Featuring a beer garden, food vendors, children's games and the band Highway, the event will be held downtown on south Main Street. The arts and crafts show will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 14 and 15 on the football field at Col. John Wheeler Middle School. 401 W. Joliet St. Vendor spaces 10-by-10-feet are $85. The Hub Dollie Parade will begin at 11 a.m. June 16 at the Old Courthouse, while the Pet Parade will begin at 5 p.m. in the Sheep and Swine Pavilion at the Lake County Fairgrounds, 889 S. Court St. The Taste of Crown Point will take place from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. June 20 and 21 around the square, with plenty of food vendors, live music and the Marriage Mill ceremony at 6 p.m. June 20. The Gospel Concert will be at 6:30 p.m. June 23 on the Old Courthouse lawn (bring a lawn chair), and the Fourth of July Parade will be at 2 p.m. July 4 on Main Street.

FITNESS CHALLENGE | Schererville

Altered Image Fitness hosts a four-week challenge June 9 to July 6 at 1000 Eagle Ridge Drive, Suite D. It will consist of an exercise program as well as weekly nutritional classes taught by Linda Krahn. There will be weekly door prizes as well as grand prizes for the highest total points and the highest number of pounds and inches lost. It's open to the public but registration is required. A nominal fee for materials will be charged.

Craft show | Lansing

Lansing Presbyterian Church's 29th annual arts and crafts fair is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today on the lawn at the church, 2625 Ridge Road. This is an outdoor craft fair. Lunch will be served inside by Hearts in Motion. Coffee, doughnuts, pop and popcorn will be served by the Boy Scouts. A health van will offer medical screenings for adults. There will be games and activities for children. Admission and parking are free.

Thornton Fractional | Alumni

The TF Golden Alumni Association will hold its annual reunion banquet on June 22 at the Villa de Bruno. The Golden Alumni Association is open to all who graduated from Thornton Fractional 50 years ago or more. The banquet is $22 for members and their guests and $30 for nonmembers.

AEROBICS CLASSES | Whiting

New aerobics classes have been added by the Whiting Parks and Recreation Department at the Whiting Community Center, 1938 Clark St. At 6:30 p.m. Thursdays is a TNT Class, or Trim and Tone, with a new instructor. Trim and tone your body using dumbbells and resistant bands while shaking off calories with cardio/dance moves. This class is great for all levels. At 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, take a cardio kickboxing class. The boxer-style workout will provide an intense workout. Fees apply.

VEGAS TRIP | Highland

Highland Parks and Recreation Department offers a trip Sept. 5 to 15 to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. The trip includes 11 days of sightseeing, 10 nights of lodging (two at a Las Vegas hotel), 16 meals and gaming. A deposit is $75. Fee is $939 for doubles, $1,329 for singles and $919 for triples. STRENGTH TRAINING | Munster
