ST. JOHN | The Lake Central School Corp. will be walking, biking and driving green.

The district has secured nearly $43,000 in environmental grants with the help of Legacy Environmental Services, which is based in St. John.

Bibich Elementary School in Dyer will receive $20,280 in grant funding, which then will be matched by Lake Central.

The school will receive $5,000 in state funding to purchase recycled benches, trash receptacles, supplies and bicycle racks for the new nature area.

Bibich will use a rubber surface matting material with the $14,280 it receives from the state for its walking path and trail for the new area.

The school also will receive $1,000 to purchase environmental educational materials, such as composting equipment and recycled and biodegradable products.

The district will purchase two electric-powered vehicles with a $22,400 grant.

Tom Dykiel, director of finance, said the use of the flatbed vehicles will include helping certain individuals, such as senior citizens, who may have a hard time walking through crowds at school athletic events.
