PORTAGE | The city's Traffic Commission has posted its vehicle frost law. The law limits the weight of vehicles allowed to travel on city streets. Limitations are determined by vehicle weight, rim width and number of axles.

Vehicles exceeding posted weights are required to avoid all city streets. Exemptions from the frost law are any state or interstate routes and Willowcreek Road/Willowcreek Road bypass between U.S. 20 and County Road 700 North.

To determine weight limits, visit the city's Web site at ci.portage-in.com.

Vehicles exceeding the weight limit and cannot be broken down into fewer loads may apply for a variance. The variance application is available on the Web site.

For additional information, contact the Department of Public Works at (219) 762-4204, ext. 3.
