Three Northwest Indiana high schools won state championship honors Saturday at the Purdue University Indiana Academic Super Bowl State Finals at Loeb Playhouse.

Griffith High won first place in the interdisciplinary category, Wheeler High in math and Emerson School for the Performing and Visual Arts in social studies.

Andrean High took runner-up honors in social studies and Morgan Township High was runner-up in science. Third place in fine arts went to Valparaiso High and third place in math went to Kouts High.

Crown Point High had the distinction of being the only local school to compete in three categories, which were math, interdisciplinary and science. It also was the school's first trip to the state finals.

"All these kids always expect the highest of themselves," said coach Jason McGee, a high school math teacher. "They're all very intelligent kids and Academic Super Bowl gives them a chance to show off their skills."

Each school competes in one of four classes based on the school's size. There are a total of six subject areas schools can compete in.

The theme of this year's competition was the Civil War: 1820-1877.

All the schools at the state finals qualified by competing in regional competitions last month.
