TULIP FESTIVAL | NW. Indiana

Youngstown Sheet & Tube Old-Timers offer a trip May 9 to the Tulip Time Festival in Holland, Mich. The cost of $125 per person will cover two meals, a personal guided tour of three hours, concert reserved seating and transportation by motorcoach.

CALL-IN DAY | Nationwide

May 1 is a National Call-in Day to focus the attention of the U.S. Congress on a recent investigation that revealed cruel treatment of cows and potential food safety issues at a California facility. U.S. senators and representatives are being asked to cosponsor The Downed Animal and Food Safety Protection Act (H.R. 661/S. 394) to protect downed animals from abuse. The Humane Society Legislative Fund is asking everyone to call the U.S. Capitol switchboard May 1 and ask for the offices of their U.S. senators and representatives in order to ask for their support.

WWII TRIBUTE | Lowell

A World War II tribute, "Recognizing and honoring World War II Veterans," will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 3 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 4 at Buckley Homestead County Park, 3606 Belshaw Road. Military encampments, vehicles and equipment, simulated battles at 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., Victory Garden display and cooking demonstrations, President Franklin D. Roosevelt impersonator, museum exhibits, USO-type entertainment by Purdue University Calumet students, reminiscing by WWII veterans and memories of the war years in Europe by author Katherine and George Flotz and food concessions. Admission is $5, but children 6 and younger attend free. For the first time, a WWII military convoy will travel through downtown Lowell at 4 p.m. May 2.

MAY CROWNING | Lake Station

The annual May Crowning of the Blessed Mother, Living Rosary and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will be hosted by the Altar and Rosary Sodality at 4 p.m. May 4

at St. Francis Xavier Church Hall, 2447 Putnam St. The ceremonial procession begins at 4 will be escorted by the Santa Maria Venegas 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Assembly and the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will be celebrated by the Rev. Eduardo Malagon. The rosary will be recited in several languages. The community and all parishes are invited to gather for this devotion to the Blessed Mother.

FUNDRAISING FUNDAMENTALS | Hobart

The Discovery Alliance is offering a workshop, "Fundraising Fundamentals: The Infrastructure & Messaging Required for Success," from 8 a.m. to noon May 7 at Avalon Manor, 3550 E. U.S. 30. A continental breakfast will be served. The cost is $50 for the first participant and $25 for each of an organization's additional participants. Kathryn W. Miree, president of Kathryn W. Miree & Associates, Inc., will present a diversified fundraising platform and how it is critical to the long-term survival of a nonprofit organization. Registration will close May 2.

TEXAS HOLD' EM | Crown Point

A Wildcat Texas Hold' Em Tournament for those 21 and older will be held at 6 p.m. May 3 in Hammes Hall at St. Mary Catholic Community School, 405 E. Joliet St. Win one of the cash prizes going to the top 10 finishers, including a minimum $2,500 first-place prize, as well as trophies to the top five. Registration fee of $80 includes sandwiches, beer and soft drinks. Limited re-buys and one add-on possibility. Registration is from 5 to 6 p.m. Proceeds will fund the Class of 2009 trip to Washington, D.C.

BAND CONCERT | Hobart

Hobart's Rusty Pipes Community Concert Band will present its 26th annual Spring Concert at 3 p.m. May 4 in the Hobart High School auditorium, 36 E. Eighth St. Admission is $3 for adults. Children and students attend free. The 55-member band will present a variety of music, from marches to Broadway hits and classical music.

MUSEUM OPENS | Merrillville

Merrillville/Ross Township Historical Society kicks off its 2008 museum season on from 1 to 4 p.m. May 4 at the museum, 13 W. 73rd Ave. Free admission, vintage cars, refreshments and a special exhibit honoring the 1933 Chicago World's Fair will be featured. This summer the society is showcasing Roy Foreman's memorabilia collection from the 1933 Chicago's World's Fair. He will present an overview of the fair and discuss his collection at 1:30. The museum is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays in May through October.

MINI DAY CAMP | Hobart

Register children for a Preschool Mini Day Camp for preschoolers of all abilities this summer at the Hobart Family YMCA, 601 W. 40th Place. The YMCA is collaborating with the Center for Possibilities Cerebral Palsy of Northwest Indiana to offer this mini summer day camp for ages 3 to 5. The goal is to provide a fun-filled camp from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday, June 2 through 13, while meeting the needs of all campers. Included in the daily schedule will be games, crafts, gym time, outdoor time, music, cooking, free play, story time, and snacks. A $20 nonrefundable registration fee, which includes a T-shirt, memory scrapbook, awards and pizza party, is due at registration. Camp fees of $45 for a Y-member and $60 for a nonmember will also be due at registration. The Bubel/Aiken Foundation will provide additional funding and training. Camp filled up quickly last year so families are encouraged to enroll as soon as possible. Class size is limited

SENIOR BASH | Lowell

Southlake Families In Action has sponsored the Senior Bash, a Project Graduation event for all graduating Lowell High School seniors to share one last evening as a class before they take on the next challenges of their lives. The 2008 Senior Bash will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. May 10 in the field house of the high school and is open to all graduating seniors including mid-term grads and exchange students. This free evening of fun is made possible by the generosity of the Lowell community. Parents, bus drivers, and others donate time, food, door prizes, and money. There will be food, door prizes, a drawing for class quilts and kindergarten class pillows, dancing, videos, volleyball and basketball. Donations of door prizes can be given to any SFIA member or sent to the high school office, and monetary gifts can be sent to 17406 Mount St., Lowell, IN 46356.

BASKET CONTEST | Lowell

A Mother's Day Basket Contest is underway at the Lowell Public Library, 1505 E. Commercial Ave., and continues until May 9 for young adults in grades 6 to 12 at the Lowell library and its Shelby and Schneider branches. Each time a YA comes into the library, they can fill out one heart with a word that describes their mother, along with their name and phone number. A drawing will be held May 9 and the winner will be contacted to pick up their basket in time for Mother's Day.

SUMMER CAMP | Hobart

Registrations is open for an eight-week Preschool Summer Day Camp for ages 3 to 5 at Hobart Family YMCA, 601 W. 40th Place. The camp will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, June 24 through Aug. 14. This camp will continue to prepare children for preschool or kindergarten. and include games, learning centers, arts & crafts, gym time, music, cooking, snacks, free-play and swimming. As an extra bonus, children will be able to participate in Sports of all Sorts with Coach Jeff Renn. The YMCA will provide a beverage and a snack, and campers will bring a sack lunch each day. Hobart High School's Wolffgang choral group performs at 7 p.m. May 7 at Suncrest Christian Church, 10009 Parrish St. Though this event will be sponsored by the seniors group, Young At Heart, people of all ages are invited. NEEDLE ARTISANS | Munster

Live Free, USA hosts Survival Challenge 2008, family preparedness for the 21st Century, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 3 in the Potawatomi Group Camp Hall at Tippecanoe River State Park. It's the 40th year the group has conducted educational program at Tippecanoe. Subjects include first aid, food storage, water purification, biological hazard protection, emergency sanitation, children's survival and emergency equipment. Families are encouraged to participate. MOTORCYCLE RIDE | Munster

The American Veterans Motorcycle Riders Association, Chapter 1, is helping with a bike run May 4 for Relay for Life in Hammond. Relay is a voluntary, not-for-profit organization that raises money for research and community awareness of cancer. The ride starts at Calumet Harley Davidson, on Calumet Avenue just north of Main Street. Signups and donations start at noon with the last motorcycle leaving at 1:30 p.m. Cost is $20 for single riders and $10 for passengers. T-shirts and pins will go to the first 250 riders. The public is welcome. The ride ends at Wicker Park Pavilion in Highland. Food, prizes, beer garden, 50-50 raffle and a deejay will be part of the event. Relay for Life is set for June 13 at Gavit High School.
