PARADE WINNER | Crown Point
Katelyn Cservenyak, a sixth grader at Col. John Wheeler Middle School, is the winner of the Crown Point 4th of July Parade Committee's contest to design the parade program cover art. She received a $50 U.S. Savings Bond and a free art lesson at the South Short Arts Center, and will serve as Junior Grand Marshal of this year's parade at 2 p.m. July 4. Her artwork will grace the cover of this year's parade programs.

SHARE A BOOK | Crown Point, Winfield
Share a favorite summer book with others at the monthly book discussion group meetings at the Crown Point Community Library and its Winfield branch. CHECK THE SKY | Lowell
Calumet Astronomical Society hosts free public observing from 9 p.m. to midnight July 5 at the Conway Observatory, 19000 Chase St., southeast of Buckley Homestead County Park. Volunteers will guide visitors in the use of telescopes and astronomical binoculars to observe the majesty of the skies. Programs are dependent on cloud cover and weather conditions. Turn south from Ind. 2 on Hendricks St. to Belshaw Road, then turn left (east) to the first right turn, Chase St., and go one mile south. Dress for outdoor weather. Families are welcome, but must keep a watch on small children in the dark. Standard flashlights are prohibited, but create a red filter light by placing a red balloon over a standard flashlight.

GARDENERS TO MEET | Hobart
Lake County Park Department's Gardening Club meets at 10 a.m. July 8 in the Visitor Center meeting room at Deep River County Park, 9410 Old Lincoln Hwy. Parks department horticulturist Bryan McKay will discuss chemical drift and damage, Japanese beetle time, galls and summer disease problems. Members learn about all types of flowers, plants, vegetables and trees and how to solve gardening problems, get a monthly newsletter and help the staff plant and maintain gardens at the county parks. Refreshments are available. There are no dues.

Adults interested in photography are invited to the monthly Lake County Parks Department's monthly Photo Club meeting at 7 p.m. July 9 in the Visitor Center at Deep River County Park, 9410 Old Lincoln Hwy. Members will discuss the results of their recent photographic outings. The show-and-tell topic is "Faces - Happy, Sad, Funny, Cute," and members are asked to bring up to four photos (8-by-10-inches or larger), and up to 10 slides or digital images to show. There are no dues or obligations to attend. Doors open at 6 p.m. for a social hour.

STEELWORKER DAY | Gary
The second American Steelworker Recognition Day will be held Aug. 10 at the Gary SouthShore RailCat baseball game vs. the Kansas City T-Bones at the U.S. Steel Yard. This year's honoree is Robert Forbes, whose leadership proved essential in producing a quality product at the Indiana Harbor Works. Cost is $23 for a pregame buffet lunch and reserved seating for the 2 p.m. game. Deadline to order tickets is July 10.

The Duneland Woodcarvers will exhibit and demonstrate the art of woodcarving at the 24th Annual Antique Power and Steam Show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 11, 12 and 13 at the Lake County Fairgrounds, 889 S. Court St. Admission to the show is $4 for adults and children 16 years and older. Children 15 years and younger are admitted free with an adult. Free parking is available. POWER STEAM SHOW | Crown Point
South Lake Agricultural Historical Society Inc. presents its 24th Annual Antique Power Steam Show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 11, 12 and 13 at the Lake County Fairgrounds, 889 S. Court St. Operating steam engines, sawmills, threshing machines, balers and old farming tools, wagons, small engines, horse shoeing and early agricultural equipment are displayed. Antique cars and trucks, a Garden Tractor Pull and farm toy show are featured as well as a petting zoo and model railroad display. Entertainment, food and a flea market. John Deer tractors and Witte small engines are featured this year. Admission is $4 for adults and free for youths 15 and younger with an adult. Parking is free.

Notre Dame Club of Northwest Indiana will host its annual Hesburgh Lecture with Dr. Kevin and Kathy Misiewicz at 2 p.m. July 20 in the Solar Room at St. Thomas More Church, 8435 Calumet Ave. in Munster. Free to all, the Misiewiczs, leaders in the Worldwide Marriage Encounter ministry, will address the topic "Investing in Your Marriage So It Pays High Dividends," suited for married and engaged couples, and volunteers who assist with pre-cana programs. This interactive lecture can improve listening and responding skills as well as generate a few good laughs. Together, the speakers they have raised eight children n four of whom are adopted, special needs children. Snacks and beverages will be served.
