CROWN POINT | Lake County prosecutors charged a Lake Station man Tuesday with hurting his invalid father, preventing a caregiver from giving the elderly man aid and groping the caregiver.
Jamie Skomp, 44, is charged with intimidation, sexual battery and battery and faces a maximum prison term of nine years if convicted on all counts.
A nurse's aide who had been caring for Skomp's father said when she arrived at the house Sept. 6, she saw the invalid man's empty wheelchair and noticed the victim was lying on the kitchen floor, court records state.
She said Skomp was yelling at his father for falling and threatening to shoot the elderly man.
When she tried to help Skomp's father, Skomp grabbed her and fondled her breasts, court records allege.
Lake Station police were called to the Skomp home for what was described as a hostage situation, court records show.
Officers called and spoke with Skomp, who sounded intoxicated and confused, convincing the suspect to come out of the house, police reports state.
When police went inside, they found a loaded .22-caliber rifle with an attached silencer on Skomp's bed. Knives were scattered throughout the house.
