GARAGE SALE | Merrillville

Each One Reach One Child Inc., a nonprofit group, is sponsoring a garage sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at 6065 Harrison Place, near Taft Street. The event offers all-new home and yard decorations at wholesale prices. All proceeds are donated for EOROC's mission of violence prevention among youths.

LEARN TO KNIT | Cedar Lake

Beginners can learn the basics of knitting and experienced knitters can improve their skills in knitting classes offered at 7 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Lake County Public Library's Cedar Lake branch, 10010 W. 133rd Ave. Participants should bring size 7 knitting needles and cotton yarn.

SLAVONIA BAND | Merrillville

Croatian Sons Lodge 170 of the Croatian Fraternal Union will sponsor an evening of entertainment at 7 p.m. Sept. 4 by the Slavonia Band from Zupanja, Croatia at the Croatian Center, 8550 Taft St. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children at the door. The band, comprised of six instrumentalists and a male vocalist, has been chosen for the CFU Cultural Tour for 2008.

FALL GOLF LEAGUE | Cedar Lake

Lake County Parks and Recreation Department will host a non-instructive, noncompetitive Junior Golf League this fall for ages 5 to 17 at Cedar Creek Family Golf Center, 10483 W. 109th Ave. Youths will play nine holes on Wednesdays, Sept. 3 through Oct. 22, with tee times beginning at 4 p.m. Cost is $40 for ages 5 to 9 (parents must stay on the property) and $60 for ages 10 to 17. Experienced golfers only, with proper etiquette and knowledge of the game required. Golfers must have own clubs, balls and water bottles. Register by first day of play.

MUM SALE | Crown Point

Friends of St. Anthony Hospice is taking preorders for its second mum sale. Last year, the group sold more than 800 mums. This year, mums will come planted in one-gallon containers. Red, purple and yellow varieties will be available for $5 per plant. All proceeds generated from this year's plant sale will help support St. Anthony Hospice patients and family members. Mums must be preordered and prepaid before Sept. 2. All plants will be available for pick up at Holy Family Child Care, 203 Franciscan Drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 13.

GOLF OUTING | Hobart

The second St. Bridget Catholic School golf outing will begin with an 8 a.m. shotgun start

Sept. 6 at Duck Creek Golf Course, 638 N. 700 West. Cost is $50 for golf fee, use of cart, lunch and more. Prizes for longest drive, closest to the pin, longest putt and voluntary skins game. Reservations due by Sept. 5.

DARE TO GOLF | Crown Point

Crown Point Police Department's DARE Program will host its annual scramble golf outing fundraiser Sept. 7 at White Hawk Country Club, 1001 White Hawk Drive, just off Summit Street. Cost is $90 per golfer or $360 for a foursome and includes green fees, use of golf cart, buffet dinner, beverage tickets and door prizes. Hole sponsorships are also available.

All of the net proceeds go to the DARE program. Tickets can be purchased at the police station, 124 N. East St.

MONTHLY BREAKFAST | Crown Point

Fred Schmidt American Legion Post 20, Auxiliary Unit 20 and the Sons of the Legion will serve the monthly breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. Sept. 6 at the post home, 1401 N. Main St. All-you-can-eat plain or blueberry pancakes, sausage, made-to-order eggs, biscuits and gravy, toast, juice, coffee and milk cost $6 for adults, $5 for veterans and $2.50 for children 6 to 12. Younger children eat free. Proceeds benefit American Legion projects for the local library, scholarships, youth, veterans and their families. This month, school supplies are being collected at the door for local schools.

CHINESE CONSUL AT LUNCH | Gary

Gary Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly membership luncheon at noon Sept. 8 at the Genesis Convention Center, One Genesis Center Plaza. Maoming Chu, deputy consul general of China, will be the guest speaker. Last May, representatives from the Gary area joined Mayor Rudy Clay on a trade mission to China. The results included a sister city relationship with the City of Fuxin, a sister university relation between Ivy Tech Community College and the University of Fuxin, and an opportunity for investments by Chinese companies in Gary. RECYCLING KITS | Crown Point

City of Crown Point is continuing to provide Hub City businesses with free Workplace Recycling "Start-Up Kits" to implement workplace recycling. Crown Point businesses can call the Mayor's Office at (219) 662-3240, to schedule a time to pick-up a kit at the Geisen Building, 109 N. East St. The free kits include five desk side recycling containers and one 18-gallon central recycling container with a lid. Downloadable recycling forms are also available for Crown Point businesses at www.crownpoint.in.gov.

GOLF OUTING | Highland

The Independent Veterans Society of Indiana, Inc., will hold its first golf outing Aug. 30 at Wicker Park Golf Course, 8554 Indianapolis Blvd. Registration is at 8 a.m., with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The cost is $100 per golfer, which includes lunch, dinner, drink tickets and door prizes. Independent Veterans Society of Indiana is a nonprofit organization that helps with assistance, guidance, information and group support for veterans and their families on a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week basis.

POKER RUN | Michigan City

"Ride To Cure Lupus," a poker run to benefit the Lupus Foundation of America, Inc., will be Aug. 30. The cost is $10 for the driver and $15 for driver and passenger. T-shirts and tanks cost $10. The poker run will start with registration between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Michigan City Harley, 2968 N. U.S. 421. The five stops on the poker run include Joe's Bar, 2958 W. U.S. 12, Michigan City; Leroy's Hot Stuff, 333 W. U.S. 20, Porter; Ruthie's Central Lounge, 3425 Central Ave., Lake Station; WoJo's Saloon, 391-1 W. U.S. 6, South Haven; and The Coachlite, 361 Calumet Ave., Chesterton. The last bike will return by 4 p.m. The event also includes a live band, beer garden, food and raffles. All vehicles are welcome.
