Hammond sponsors job fair Thursday

Hammond residents should bring copies of their resume and come prepared to meet recruiters at the Hammond Job Fair from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at Jean Shepherd Community Center, 3031 J.F. Mahoney Drive.

Financial, service, education, health care, gaming, trade unions and other industries representing Northwest Indiana and Illinois will be represented. A human resource panel representing participating businesses will talk about keys to success for the job seeker at 1 p.m.

Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr., the Mayor's Office of Economic Development, Hammond Urban Enterprise Association, and Workforce Development Services sponsor the fair.

HAMMOND

Collection schedule same on Good Friday

Hammond's Sanitation and Recycling Department will be on duty Good Friday.

That means the Monday-through-Friday garbage and scheduled recycling pickups will be collected as planned.

EAST CHICAGO

Library hosts egg hunt, tea party

The East Chicago Public Library holds an indoor Easter egg hunt and tea party at 11 a.m. today at the Main Library, 2401 E. Columbus Drive.

It's open to youngsters between 18 months and 5 years old.

Eggs filled with Easter treats will be hidden throughout the library in between book shelves, under chairs and tables as children fill their Easter baskets. Directly following will be an Easter tea party with tea and crumpets shared by toddlers, parents and library personnel.

Books go for a buck at IUN

The Indiana University Northwest Anthropology Club hosts its semiannual Big One Dollar Book Sale through Friday at the Moraine Student Center, located next to the IUN Savannah Center, 3400 Broadway.

The sale runs from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Thursday; on Friday the sale ends at 1 p.m.

Approximately 10,000 titles will be available, and the supply will be restocked during the week.

WHITING

Park board rescheduled meeting

The Whiting park board has rescheduled its regular monthly meeting from 7 p.m. April 23 to 9 a.m. April 24.

The meeting will be in the Girls Club Room at Whiting Community Center, 1938 Clark St.

Sheehan speaks at IUN April 11

Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a son who was killed in Iraq last year, addresses a gathering at 7:30 p.m. April 11 at Tamarack Hall at Indiana University Northwest, 3400 Broadway.

This is the first speaking trip to Indiana for Sheehan, who galvanized the antiwar movement with her demands to meet President Bush.

Admission is free. The first 200 attendees making any donation to the Iraq Veterans Against the War will receive a free copy of Sheehan's book "Not One More Mother's Son."

Her appearance is sponsored by the IUN Department of Minority Studies, IUN Latino Studies Program IUN Black Student Union, NAACP Gary Branch, Northwest Indiana Federation of Labor, Northwest Indiana Coalition Against the Iraq War, Purdue Calumet Campus Green, Valparaiso University Partners for Peace, Iraq Veterans Against the War, Vietnamese Veterans Against the War, and Veterans for Peace.

Park board cancel study session

The Highland Parks and Recreation Board has canceled its Thursday study session.
