Police report fireworks damage, 14 DUI arrests
Although there was some fireworks-related mischief and drunken driving arrests over the holiday weekend, authorities said they didn't encounter a huge number of problems.
One of the fireworks incidents occurred about 9 p.m. Saturday at Pamela Owen's home in the 400 block of East U.S. 6 in Jackson Township.
Owen told police a red car -- possibly an Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera -- stopped at the end of her driveway. Some people placed fireworks or explosives in her mailbox, and a short time later her mailbox was blown off its stand. The damage is $50.
Another incident occurred Friday night or Saturday morning at Robert Kirks' home on Stonegate Drive in Morgan Township. Kirks told police a rocket firework struck and broke a rear window to his home, causing $300 damage.
Another incident occurred Friday night or Saturday morning at Martha Rimsky's home on Fremont Road in South Haven. Rimsky told police something, perhaps fireworks, caused $350 damage to her picture window.
Michael Grennes, chairman of the Porter County Drunk Driving Task Force, which paid for extra patrols because the Fourth of July is typically a big drinking holiday, said it was a quiet weekend. Porter County Jail records show there were 14 drunken driving arrests during the three-day weekend, which is about the same number of arrests police see on a nonholiday Friday through Monday period.
The Porter County coroner's office reported no traffic deaths.
