MUNSTER | Police are asking the public for help in identifying a man who robbed the Jewel store Sunday evening.

Witnesses told police that, about 5:30 p.m., a man entered Jewel, 716 Ridge Road, walked past an open bank branch counter and approached the grocery store's customer service desk, Munster Detective Daymon Johnston said.

The robber handed a note to the clerk, demanding money. He then verbally demanded money, repeating what the note said, Johnston said.

A weapon was not shown and no one was injured. The man fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. He was seen fleeing in a dark-colored, four-door vehicle, Johnston said.

Images from surveillance cameras in the grocery store and the bank branch are being used to help identify the robber.

The suspect is described as a black male with slender build, between 5 feet 11 inches and 6 feet tall. He was wearing a dark-colored coat and tan skull cap, Johnston said.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call the Munster Police Department at (219) 836-6600.
