Students at Hoover Elementary School soon will have a place to park their bicycles and a swing set on which to play.

The Hoover-Schrum Elementary District 157 School Board last week approved the purchase of a bike rack from Highland Product Group at a cost of $833.18. The rack will hold about 11 bicycles, Superintendent Michele Morris said.

In addition, the board approved buying a swing set with four swings from Team Rail Inc. for the Hoover School playground. The swing set will cost $2,430, including installation.

D.157 offers accolades

Certificates of recognition were given to current and former District 157 special needs students who met or exceeded state standards on the Illinois Standards Achievement Test or the Illinois Alternative Assessment taken this past spring.

Recognized for their performance in reading were Guy Bailey, Christopher Dorsey, Jazzlyn Watson, Malcolm Draper, Brianna Sago, Jayla Winburn, Ravon Cherry, Abisola Smith, Gabrier Johnson, Davisha Junius and Oscar Torres.

Honored for writing were Ceaira Yarborough, Rakeem Baugh and Gabrier Johnson and in science were Shaquille Barnes, Rashad Blue, Malcolm Draper, Shaunde' Gibson, Devon Glass, Monshanay Green, Sha'Bryonne Handley, Jerry Haynes, Rosa Rys, Abisola Smith, Anthony Walker, Charles Williams and Dontrell Lewis.

Recognized for their scores in math were Daneisha Polk, Jayla Winburn, Fred Hall, Korey Thames, Jerry Haynes and Rosa Rys.

Superintendent Michele Morris said the district wants to have a rewards ceremony for all students who met or exceeded state standards.

D.157 adopts budget

The District 157 board also adopted an $11.03 million spending plan for 2008-09, representing a 13 percent increase over last year's actual spending, business manager Alicia Evans said.

The budget includes $11.3 million in revenues, a 4 percent increase over last year's actual income, she said.

The new spending plan includes building improvements such as painting, fencing, paving work and additional security cameras; staff development; and higher costs for salaries and benefits, food service, transportation and utilities.

Resignations, hirings approved

The Hoover-Schrum board accepted letters of resignation from nurses Pamela Davis, effective Sept. 21; and Kenya Ingram, effective Sept. 26; and Hoover Elementary School nursing assistant Patrice Jones, effective Oct. 3.

The board approved hiring Brenda Ware as a part-time nurse at Schrum Memorial School, effective Sept. 30, and Patricia Buckner as a full-time licensed practical nurse for Hoover Elementary School. Ware will be paid $20 per hour and Buckner will receive a $35,000 annual salary, prorated to her Sept. 30 starting date.

Also approved for hiring is Patricia Finley as a full-time special education math teacher at Schrum and Christine Wolcott as a full-time fifth-grade teacher at Hoover, both effective Sept. 30. Also hired is Lina Meza as a part-time night custodian at a salary of $10 per hour, effective Sept. 30.

The board also approved five days of unpaid leave for Hoover social worker Alison Possehl for Sept. 2 through 4 and Sept. 8 and 9.

Heritage students honored

Four Heritage Middle School students were honored Tuesday with the monthly National Attitude Award.

Those selected were fifth-grade student Elsa Calderon, sixth-grader Dan Diaz, seventh-grade student Tremayne Hollis and eighth-grader DeAira Cooper.

One student from each grade level is chosen each month by his or her teachers to receive the award based on the student's attitude about school work, attendance, behavior and character.
