HAMMOND | A Hammond woman was driving without a license when she ran over and killed a man Saturday night in a Hammond driveway, police said Sunday.

"This is a woman who should not have been driving," Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller said.

The woman could face criminal charges in the man's death. A police investigator does not believe the man's death was a homicide, but police will forward information to the Lake County prosecutor's office for a decision on possible charges, Miller said.

The woman backed a Lincoln Navigator into the man in a driveway outside a home in the 6600 block of Madison Avenue, then drove forward and hit him again, Miller said.

Police did not give the woman's name Sunday night. The Lake County coroner's office did not give the dead man's name Sunday night. The man died at the scene, Lt. Richard Hoyda said.

A man walking into the house attached to the driveway death scene Sunday night said the dead man lived at that address. He said no one in the house Sunday night spoke fluent English. Neighbor Bob Griffith said the driver and the dead man lived in the house.

Griffith said Saturday night neighbors told him they saw the woman repeatedly drive over the man's body. Neighbors said they knocked on the SUV's window to try to stop her, Griffith said.

The woman cooperated with officers, Hoyda said.
