Illinois man charged with battery on officer
A part-time Phoenix, Ill., police officer has been charged with battery following an altercation with a Merrillville police officer Saturday outside of The Rink, 7930 Whitcomb St.
Chester Lee Miller, 58, who resides in County Club Hills, Ill., was charged with battery on law enforcement and resisting law enforcement in Merrillville Town Court.
Merrillville police Operations Cmdr. Lance Huish said police were dispatched to The Rink about 10:55 p.m. Saturday because of a disturbance. When officers arrived, about 300 juveniles were in the street and near the Speedway gas station on U.S. 30, Huish said.
Merrillville police Officer Curtis Minchuk approached Miller, who told Minchuk he was a security officer.
Miller displayed a badge to Minchuk, Huish said, and Minchuk asked to see the badge again. Miller then "smacked" Minchuk when he attempted to take the badge, Huish said, and also struggled with police when he was taken into custody.
