CROWN POINT | The crowd gathered early Tuesday morning on Crown Point's Main Street to watch the filming of the movie "Public Enemies" was a bit thinner than the previous day.

But the enthusiasm over seeing Johnny Depp, the star of the John Dillinger biopic filming on the square this week, was still buzzing through the group.

"About 7:30 or 8 last night, we decided to stay around after everybody was off the set and he walked down the line and touched people's hands and said 'Thanks,'" Hanley Russell, 17, of Crown Point said just before 6 a.m. Tuesday. "I'm so glad I came up here."

While onlookers numbered in the hundreds by midday Monday, the early morning crew totalled just under 30 Tuesday morning.

The bone chilling winds reduced most Depp seekers to mounds of sleeping bags and blankets piled on the sidewalk and chairs behind an orange snow fence.

Cameron Davis, 15, of Lowell was back for a second day with his sister Moriah Davis, 14. The siblings saw Depp moving back and forth from the set to his trailer Monday afternoon.

"It's just fun," Moriah said. "I got a really good picture of him."

Many of the girls and young women on the square said they were happy to see the beard and wild hair Depp sported in several recent films gone, replaced with a clean-shaven face and short, neat hair.

"I think I forgot how cute he really is," said Liz Waters, 23, of Valparaiso. "He looks really, really good."

Just a few feet away, an antique car sat on a trailer behind a truck parked in front of the Carnegie Center. The day before, film crews assembled a cobblestone overlay on Main Street in front of the old courthouse and jail in anticipation of outdoor shooting Tuesday.
