Exchange students need host families

DM Discoveries still has four foreign exchange students that need host families from Crown Point by Aug. 31, otherwise the students will not be able to take part in the exchange program this year.

If any local family is able to open their home to one of these students, call Chris at (219) 306-1018 immediately. The students have their own spending money and only need a bed of their own (they can share a room with the same sex) and meals.

Donate to Scout sale

Boy Scout Troop 45 will host its annual garage sale from 7 a.m. to noon Sept. 20 at the south end of the Farmer's Market on South Main Street.

The troop is accepting donated items from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday evenings and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays through Sept.13 Donations at First Presbyterian Church, 218 S. Court St.. If you have items to donate and need assistance, call Mary at (219) 662-8047 to arrange pick up.

Ballet auditions

Indiana Youth Ballet will be holding auditions for its annual production of "The Nutcracker" on Sept. 7 at Broad Horizons Inc., 1234 N. Broad Street in Griffith. Audition times vary depending on age.

Female dancers should wear a solid-colored leotard, pink tights and ballet shoes, and dancers on pointe should bring pointe shoes. Male dancers should wear black sweat pants or shorts, a short sleeved white T-shirt and white socks or ballet shoes.

There will be a mandatory parent meeting at 5:30 p.m. "The Nutcracker" will be performed Nov. 12-14 at Crete-Monee High School.

Seniors stay active

Southlake YMCA, 1450 S. Court St., is offering several programs for senior citizens, including Slimnastics, Beginning Line Dancing, Intermediate Line Dancing, Tai Chi, Circuit Fit, Healthy Back and Hip, Gentle Yoga and Beginning Ballroom Dancing.

Volunteer at the library

Crown Point Community Library is accepting applications for teen volunteers from students in grades 7 through 12. Applications must be turned in by Sept. 10 to the library, 214 S. Court St.

Teens will work one afternoon a week during the school year, helping take care of the youth area, assisting the youth librarian and helping in the library. These hours would count toward high school required community service hours.

Las Vegas Nite planned

St. Mary Catholic Community School will hold its annual Las Vegas Nite on Sept. 6 with the Wildcat Texas Hold'em Tournament beginning at 6:30 sharp. There is early registration until 1 p.m. Sept. 3 at the school office and a $60 fee which includes $500 chip bonus, Vegas Nite entry, beer, soft drinks and sandwiches.

The prize pot will be distributed to the top 10 finishers and the top 5 will receive trophies. Dealers will be provided for the final five tables. Seating is limited and re-buys and one add-on opportunity will be available. Call Mary at (219) 663-0676.
