VALPARAISO OLDTIME DANCE | Valparaiso
The next Valparaiso Oldtime dance will begin at 7 p.m. May 17 at the YMCA, 55 Chicago St. The dance is open to the public and children are welcome. The cost is $5 per person or $15 for the family. Admission is free to VU students.

ALZHEIMER'S EXPO |Merrillville
The first Alzheimer's Association Resource and Education Expo is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 21 at the University of Phoenix, 8401 W. Ohio St. This is free to the public. There will be a community resource room, massage and fun in the stress relieving room and hourly speakers.

FLORAL DESIGN CLASS | Valparaiso
The Purdue North Central - Porter County Office of Continuing Education is offering a non-credit floral design course which will focus on fundamentals of floral design, design theory, application, design shapes and steps of construction. Participants will learn about tools, containers and how to create floral masterpieces while using fresh flowers and foliage. This course "Floral Studio Fundamentals" will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, May 13-27 at PNC - Porter County, located at 600 Vale Park Road. The registration fee is $119 with an additional flower supply fee of $75.

CAREER COUNSELING PROGRAM | Westville
Porter County will offer the Discover Career Counseling Program for high school students who may be undecided about their future plans and need career planning assistance. This free personalized service will help high school students learn more about occupations and college majors that match their personal interests, abilities, and values. The workshop is 7-9 p.m. May 14 at 600 Vale Park Road and is free but registration is required. Individual appointments are also available at both Purdue North Central in Westville and PNC - Porter County. The Discover program guides the high school student through the process of decision making to learn what classes to expect to study with a certain major; what majors to pursue for particular occupations and what school have that major. Discover offers detailed straight-forward information on more than 500 careers.

Bead and breakfast | Valparaiso
La Beada Loca, 255 Indiana Ave., is hosting a free bead and breakfast May 17. The project for the month is beginner's stringing. Instruction is free, materials extra. Reservations are a must. The bead and breakfast is from 10 a.m. to noon.

DEVELOPMENTAL SCREENINGS | Valparaiso
Opportunity Enterprises' early intervention program, All About Kids (AAK), will be offering free developmental screenings on Friday, May 16 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at their office located at 3101 Evans Avenue in Valparaiso IN. The free screenings are for children from birth to three years of age. To schedule an appointment, please call (219) 462-0786.
Children who have a disability, a diagnosed developmental delay, or who is biologically at risk may be eligible for All About Kids Early Intervention services. AAK therapists provide developmental therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, family training, and service coordination.

SWIMMING LESSONS | Chesterton
Registration for Summer Learn-to-swim lessons for Duneland School children will be held from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. May 20 and 21 at the Duneland Alternative Learning Center, 601 W. Morgan Ave., Suite 1. This program is open only to those students attending the Duneland Schools. Participants may register for only one session of time. Parents may register child(ren) who measure at least 42" to the chin (in order to touch the bottom) and must be eligible to be enrolled in kindergarten (or older) during the 2008-2009 school year for one of three sessions. Each session (10-one hour lessons) runs Monday through Friday at the Chesterton Middle School Pool. Session I (June 9-20), Session II (June 23-July 3 with a Saturday, June 28 lesson) runs from 9:30-10:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m., and 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; and Session III (July 21-Aug. 1) runs from 9:30-10:30 a.m. or 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Classes are limited to 35 students per hour. Fee is $30 for ten lessons.

The sixth annual Deacon Jack McGuckin/Saint Paul Catholic School Golf Outing begins with registration at noon May 18 at Aberdeen. The shotgun start is at 1:30 p.m. Cost is $110 per person and includes green fees, practice range, cart, dinner, drink tickets and prizes.

KID FITNESS
Fun Fitness for Kids exercise class is set for ages 3-4 from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Wednesdays, May 21-June 25 and on Tuesdays for ages 5 to 7 from 4:15 to 5 p.m. May 20 through June 24 at Duneland Health & Wellness Institute, 810 Michael Drive. All classes will be held in the group exercise studio. This fun-filled class is great to get kids up and moving.

ACTING COURSE DEADLINE | Valparaiso
The deadline for high school students to apply for a Valparaiso University theatre course offered this summer through the Young Scholar Academy is May 26. The course is designed to develop the skills necessary for acting onstage.
Acting: Serious Play is a two-week intensive course that will meet daily Monday though Friday, June 16 to 27. Each day's session will run from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with laboratory hours from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
The course will be taught by Lee Orchard, chair of Valparaiso's Department of Theatre. He has taught and directed at the university level for more than 30 years, specializing in the areas of performance pedagogy, directing, theatre and culture, and musical theatre.
The course is designed to develop the student's understanding of the elements of acting, engage the student in cooperative discipline and help the student gain confidence with public performance. Students will gain essential skills in observation and concentration, and will also develop a greater capacity for creative risk and collaborative imagination.
The cost of the course is $600. Space is limited in order to ensure personal attention and a fast-paced setting.

FUNDRAISER BENEFIT | Valparaiso
Mental Health America of Porter County will present a fundraiser to benefit mental wellness in Porter County. Porter County Unplugged is from 5 to 8 p.m. May 17 at The Franklin House, 58 Campbell St. This event is for ages 21 and older. There is a $5 entry fee per musician. Area musicians are invited to sign up now to compete in Porter County Unplugged, a benefit for Mental Health America of Porter County. Acoustic performers will compete for cash prizes, with audience votes determining the winners. The top awards will be $200, $100 and $50.

KidsCamp registration is now open at the Valparaiso and South Haven Boys & Girls Clubs. The Valpo club will accept registration from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. The South Haven club will accept registration from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. and from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. KidsCamp opens June 4 in Valpo and June 5 in South Haven.
