Fair gives attendees ideas to stay active

Association for Wolf Lake Initiative offers fifth annual event

CHICAGO | Planners for the fifth annual Active Living Faire have announced several changes for Saturday's event at Wolf Lake.

Mary Feagin, of Total Wellness Connection, will talk about family fitness at 9:30 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m. The nature walk and birding tour now will begin at 9:30 a.m. It will be led by Karen Garrett, of Sand Ridge Nature Center.

The fair, sponsored by the Association for the Wolf Lake Initiative, begins at 8 a.m. Morning sessions take place at shelter 1 of the William Powers Conservation Area, 124th Street and Avenue O. Afternoon sessions take place at the Environmental Education Center, 2405 Calumet Ave., Hammond.

This in the schedule:

- 9 a.m. - registration,

- 8:45 a.m. - wake up with tai chi.

- 9 a.m. to noon - farmers market; free health screenings by Oswaldo Lopez of Aunt Martha's Healthcare Network and Dimensions Healthcare System including glucose, blood pressure and body mass index; educational displays by Forest Preserve District of Cook County, South Chicago YMCA and Southeast Environmental Task Force.

- 9 a.m. - bike tour of Wolf Lake led by John Pastirik.

- 9:30 a.m. - nature walk by Karen Garrett, naturalist from Sand Ridge Nature Center.

- 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. - presentations on family fitness, container gardening, Healthy Southeast Chicago, Leave No Child Inside and healthy cooking.

- 11:30 a.m. - picnic and morning drawing for prizes.

- Noon - transfer to Indiana side of Wolf Lake.

- 12:30 p.m. - registration.

- 1 to 4 p.m. - free health screenings featuring body fat by Matt Dudzik, Purdue University Calumet; blood pressure and diabetes by Dimensions Healthcare System; educational displays by Talltree Arboretum, Southeast Environmental Task Force, Healthy Southeast Chicago; farmers market; healthy refreshments by Dinah Ramirez, Healthy Southeast Chicago.

- 2 p.m. - announcement of poster contest winners.

- 1:30 to 3 p.m. - presentations on family fitness, exercise session, CSI update, Leave No Child Inside, container gardening 101.

- 3:30 p.m. - walk along Forsythe Park by Michael Boos of the association.

- 4 p.m. - final drawing for prizes.
