LANSING | Lansing Elementary District 158 is preparing to register students for the upcoming school year.

Registration

Students who will attend kindergarten through fifth grade at Lester Crawl Primary Center and Coolidge Elementary, Oak Glen Elementary and Reavis Elementary schools can register from 1 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 8 on Aug. 12, and from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 13.

To be eligible for enrollment, all prospective kindergarten students must be at least 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, as mandated by Illinois state law.

Registration for sixth-grade students at Memorial Junior High will be from 1 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 8 on Aug. 12. Registration for seventh-grade students at Memorial will be from 1 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 8 on Aug. 13. Registration for eighth-grade students will be from 1 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 8 on Aug. 14.

Homeroom assignments will be distributed at the time of registration.

Book fees this year will be $75 per student with a $200 cap per family. There will be a discount of $15 per student for those who pay the fee on registration day.

Fees can be paid in cash or by check.

First day of school

The teachers' school year will begin Aug. 25, while all district students will attend their first day from 8:45 to 10:45 a.m. Aug. 27.

Students in kindergarten to fifth grade will start their regular daily schedule from 8:50 a.m. to 3:05 p.m. Aug. 28. Students in sixth to eighth grade will start their regular daily schedule from 8:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Aug. 28.

Requirements

State law requires that all children have a complete physical examination -- including an eye examination for kindergarten and specific immunizations, such as a hepatitis B vaccination -- upon entering kindergarten and upon entering the sixth grade.

Sixth-grade students now are required to show proof of hepatitis B immunization. It also is now mandatory that all preschool and kindergarten children receive a chicken pox vaccination. If a child already has had the disease, parents must provide a note from a physician stating so.

Physical examinations that are not more than a year old prior to the first day of school, including those given outside the state, are acceptable. A dental exam for all students in kindergarten and second and sixth grades also is mandatory.

The school code of Illinois also requires that students who participate in interscholastic athletics have an annual physical examination.

All students are required to provide proof of residency in the form of one of the following: a mortgage contract, a real estate tax bill, a signed Department of Housing and Urban Development closing statement or a signed lease with children's names listed.

At least two of the following items also are required: a current Illinois driver's license or identification card; Illinois auto license plate registration; homeowners, apartment or auto insurance policy; Illinois Department of Public Aid Medicaid card with expiration date; most recent utility bill; voter's registration card; or Lansing vehicle license application and sticker number.

All students new to the district also must provide an Illinois transfer form from the previously attended Illinois public school. Kindergarten students and transfer students need to provide an original birth certificate.
