Realtors adopt codes of inclusiveness in housing
The Greater Northwest Indiana Association of Realtors announces the creation of the GNIAR Commitment to Inclusiveness in Housing at a news conference next week.
The conference is at 10 a.m. Oct. 10 at St. Timothy's nonprofit Community Development Corp., 1600-25th St., Gary. The entrance to the development is at the corner of 24th and Hayes
The announcement is being made in cooperation with the Race Relations Council of Northwest Indiana, which began developing and promoting the Codes of Inclusiveness for the public and private sectors in the summer of 2004 in an effort to battle discrimination.
Leadership from GNIAR and the Northwest Indiana Race Relations Council will be available to answer media questions at the news conference.

PUC students debate international economy
Six Purdue University Calumet students from China, India, Suriname and Brazil will debate cultural, societal and economic issues concerning their homelands beginning at 9 a. m. Friday on campus at the Calumet Conference Center.
This International Student Research Forum intends to celebrate Purdue Calumet's growing international influence, as well as educate the community about different cultures, said Terri Chance, assistant to the associate vice chancellor of research and professional development at Purdue Calumet.
The schedule includes:
China's Economy: Booming Industry in China, 9:10 to 10 a.m.
India's Society: Impact of Globalization on Indian Society, 10:10 to 11 a.m.
Brazilian Culture: Brazil Seen From the Outside, 11:10 a.m. to noon.
The event is open the public, admission is free.

C.P. man, Hammond woman charged in battery
A 28-year-old Crown Point man and 23-year-old Hammond woman were arrested Monday after allegedly battering the father of the woman's children.
Officers received several reports at 8:09 a.m. of a disturbance in the 800 block of North Elmer. When they arrived, the father said he had two small children with Deborah Anne Hindahl, 7115 Montana Ave.
Police said Hindahl arrived at the father's house with her new boyfriend, Jason Michael Sivak, 1845 Redwood Court, to pick the kids up for the day.
As he placed his kids into their car, the father told Sivak he did not like him around his children, police said. The father said Sivak responded by punching him in the face numerous times and took him to the ground, police said.
He also told police Hindahl kicked him in the face and ribs as he was on the ground.
She said he tried to grab her so she kicked him, a police report said.
Hindahl and Sivak were arrested on charges of battery and later released on bond. The children were returned to the father.

Purdue Calumet hosts open house Oct. 13
High school students, parents and other college-bound individuals are invited to learn more about Purdue University Calumet in an open house at 10 a.m. Oct. 13 at the Calumet Conference Center.
Attendees will be able to talk with admissions representatives and faculty, learn more about academic programs, scholarship and financial aid options, student activities and experiential learning, as well as meet current students and tour campus.
The Calumet Conference Center is located one-third mile north of Interstate 80/94, three blocks east of Indianapolis Boulevard and south of 173rd Street.

Park Board to discuss job evaluation in closed session
The Highland Parks and Recreation Board meets in executive session at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Community Room of the Lincoln Center, 2450 Lincoln St.
The meeting is called to discuss a job performance evaluation of an individual employee.
