Burton has played the bongo and conga drums since the age of 10 and received a full scholarship for his drumming from Governors State University, where he played in the GSU Jazz Orchestra. As a teenager, Burton led a band named the Soul Naturals that won the Illinois State Battle of the Bands in 1969, and finished second in a national battle of the bands. He performs regularly with the South Suburban College Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Andy Hoefle.
