Members of the Model A Restorers Club are looking forward to the July 1 premiere of "Public Enemies," but their reasons have nothing to do with the filming in Crown Point or star Johnny Depp.

MARC members, who are holding their national convention in Lake County this week, are waiting to see some of their own cars featured in the film.

"We want to preserve history," said John Drengenberg, MARC member and Model A owner.

According to Drengenberg, film crews contacted MARC asking for members to drive their Model A cars in the movie. Participants were provided with era-appropriate clothing and drove their own vehicles during filming.

All MARC members maintain the cars so they are as similar as possible to those manufactured by Ford between 1928 and 1931, Drengenberg says, which made them appropriate candidates for the movie.

MARC's national convention concludes today at the Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza, where about 1,250 owners and 450 Model A cars met.

Wednesday's events included judging of the Model A cars and a fashion show for the "Lady A's," a group of women who drive the cars and embrace the fashions of the 1930s.

Phyllis Moss did not participate in the fashion show, but wore an outfit resembling 1930s fashion to Thursday's activities at the Lake County Fairgrounds.

"We are trying to promote correctness in the clothing as well as in the cars," Moss said.

Moss also said the ladies in the show are judged based on the use of proper fabrics and undergarments.

Many of the MARC members came out to the fairgrounds for the "Car Games," which included an Idle Contest, Hit the Target Contest, Car Bowling and Bean Bag Toss.

Participant John Nowak owns a 1930 Ford Model A Sedan and worked on his car with his father as a child before taking ownership.

"I've been fascinated with Model A's since I was a kid," Nowak said. "You always need to be adjusting something. It's not like a modern car."
